Buying Electronics Online

Pat Bartels
I do a lot of my shopping online these days especially when I'm looking at electronics. The only reason I might go to an actual brick and mortar store is to look at something I'm considering purchasing online. Sometimes you just have to look at the item and get a feel for how it handles or operates.

When I purchased my 55" Plasma television I did so from a company called Crutchfield. At the time I was shopping for the television they had the best price. I also look at reviews that other people have written regarding the particular model of electronics I am purchasing and to see what other shoppers' experiences are with the particular company I'm considering doing business with.

If you're purchasing a large electronic item, like a big screen TV, it only makes sense to buy it online. First of all it's going to need to be delivered anyway. You may object and think, but if something goes wrong how do I get it serviced. A lot of online merchants will provide either pickup service of the item or in house repair service for a limited amount of time. That's usually how local stores operate. Any problems with your purchase after about 30 days will need to be handled by the manufacturer unless you have purchased an additional warranty that specifically gives you in home repairs as part of the deal.

I'm not afraid to make large purchases online. I do, however, caution that you choose companies that are reputable. To do that you will need to do a little research. Many times, especially if it's a company I'm unfamiliar with, I will check with the Better Business Bureau. By doing a search with them of the company you are interested in, you will be able to see if there have been any consumer complaints against the company. You can also give the company a call and ask questions about the product you intend to buy. This way you can get a feel for the company and how they treat their customers.

Another online company I like to do business with is Amazon. Both my son and I use Amazon quite a bit. He has purchased an Amazon Prime yearly subscription that allows you unlimited two day shipping for free and one day shipping for $3.99. You can invite up to 4 household members to join on one membership of $79 a year. I usually buy my ink cartridges, gifts and various other small electronic items throughout the year and so does my son and his wife. For us the Amazon Prime subscription works out. If you don't buy much from them, though, you wouldn't want to use Amazon Prime. Just pay whatever the regular shipping charges may be. I believe at times that they offer deals on shipping just using the regular Amazon check out.

Other companies that I purchase from are Tiger Direct, New Egg, and Furnitureland South. Furnitureland South is a whole other topic as this is a place where you can buy furniture. I prefer shopping online. You just can't beat the savings and endless choices that you have through the computer.

My husband just built me a Brand New ! computer, he ordered all the parts from Tiger Direct: hard drive, tower, memory, etc, we are completely satisfied with them. Oh, and the total cost for the screaming fast, latest and greatest technology on the market in my new computer? Just $400. You can't beat it, so long as you have a computer saavy guy like mine! Cheers.

Good info on shopping for electrical items, as long as you do your research then buying online for your electricals will often find the best deal available.

It's so much easier to shop and buy online if you don't have to have it imediately! I've shopped at most of the places you mention; Amazon is usually the one-stop shopping place for almost anything! I even bought dishes to match an existing pattern there! They work with so many thrid parties that it really is like shopping at a virtual mall.
