Buying New Furniture or Thinking of Having Your Old Furniture Reupholstered? Consider Slipcovers?
The Money You Will Save Can Be Huge!
Creating your own slipcovers for a sofa, love seat, chair and even dining room chairs can be done with just a little bit of basic sewing skills. If you were thinking of buying brand new furniture or having your living room furniture completely reupholstered then consider going the more inexpensive route. In comparison to paying for either new furniture or having the furniture that you already have redone by a professional it is a great solution for your pocket book, especially if you are hurting for money. For those who do not know how to sew, nor do not wish to learn how to do so, there are also a variety of shops that have ready made slip covers which are relatively inexpensive as well when you compare them with the alternatives mentioned above.
If you decide that you are going to jump in and give it a go, then there are a variety of books on the subject that are easy to find in most bookstores. Some libraries may have books on creating slipcovers as well. There are also many websites online that have step-by-step instructions on the making of slipcovers. You can also find books online that you can order. These books explain the detailed steps of creating your own slipcover. You might also consider looking at a store that sells different kinds of fabric for a pattern, as most of the fabric shops that I have been to have a multitude of them along with the right kind of fabrics that are appropriate to use on furniture; mostly thick and sturdy materials.
The first thing to do when getting ready to create your own slipcovers is to measure the furniture to find out exactly how much fabric you will need. If you give the measurements to the professionals at any fabric shop, they should be able to easily figure out how much fabric you will need for the entire project.
If the furniture that you are planning on covering is used on a daily basis, then it is very important to be sure that the material that you use is very sturdy and will hold up over a lot of use.
Make sure that the colors that you choose to use will go well with the rest of the decor in the room. If you have the time and really enjoy a variety of looks and colors then I suggest that you consider creating more than one slip cover in different designs that you like. Most of all, keep in mind that you are going to be protecting the fabric on your furniture while enjoying a change in the look of the room whenever the mood strikes you.
