Buying Gifts for Your Employees This Christmas Season

Daniel Webb
So, you're the boss of a company and you've made it through the year with your employees, and now you'd like to give them something to show them your appreciation? This is very generous of you, but as you already know it is not a simple matter to buy gifts for your employees. Do you have very many employees, making it an arduous task? Are you worried that buying everyone the same gift will make you appear unimaginative and lazy, while buying different gifts for each person might lead to feelings of favoritism? Read on and you'll learn a few tips for avoiding this potential nightmare.

Sometimes a company can be so large that the financial burden of furnishing a gift for each employee can seem like too much. In such a situation you may wish to give each employee a less expensive gift. If you're paying for this all out of pocket then you can't really be held accountable for not furnishing each employee with a brand new ipod, now can you? If you're receiving a bonus it might be a good idea to set aside part of it for this gift buying adventure. You may also check with your company's human resources. Some businesses will allow bosses to write off the expense of buying gifts for his or her employees as it is said to promote a happier, more productive work environment. Always check with your company first, though, to ensure that you don't violate any rules regarding the expense limit of each employee' gift. Never assume you'll be reimbursed!

It is always important for a good boss to avoid any inclination towards favoritism within his company. Always assume that the gifts you buy will be discussed amongst the employees and conclusions will be drawn. An easy way to avoid favoritism is to buy everyone the same gift. This does run the risk of appearing unimaginative and impersonal but that is far better than appearing like you're picking favorites. If you'd like to you may buy more expensive gifts for your higher ranking employees, but try to buy each person in that rank the same gift.

Whether you decide to buy everyone the same gift or to adjust the value of the gift according to the managerial tier of the employee it is always important to pick a gift that will be appropriate for each and every employee under you. This can, of course, be troublesome if you have many employees from different socio-economical backgrounds. Buying everyone the same gift is not a bad idea here, as long as that gift in inoffensive. It can be hard to find that one appropriate gift, but once you've done so it's just a matter of wrapping them up and passing them out. You'll be very appreciated for the gesture!

Examples of inexpensive, appropriate gifts include coffee mugs, picture frames, and sweatshirts (all printed with the company logo if possible). These gifts are useful and will help to instill a feeling of unity within the company. If you can't think of that special gift but you have a decent budget then gift certificates aren't a bad way to go. Certificates to local eateries or well-known retailers like Amazon and Best Buy will always be in fashion.

Don't give up, you'll get through this holiday season and your employees will appreciate your generosity!
