Buying Guide for Water Dumbbells

Elle Godin
The combination of water dumbbells and a well rounded water workout is growing in popularity as it encompasses a low impact and effective workout. Water dumbbells add intensity to the workout and can assist in burning more calories and building muscle quicker. What qualities should one shop for in the pair of water dumbbells? Here are four sets of water dumbbells that I have researched to find the best pair. One pair, I use consistently as I am an avid purveyor of water aerobics - the others, I have heard great things about! Here are some of my top choices for those in the market of buying new water dumbbells.

Aquabells is one of the main brands of water dumbbells and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Their collapsible and inflatable model is a favorite since I am always on the go. The pair can fit into my gym bag without adding the extra weight, and only takes moments to prepare for the class and take apart. The cost for the pair of dumbbells is $59.00 is a great price - but others have mentioned that one hole in the dumbbell could create problems for use. So far, I have been using the dumbbells for six months and they are a pair of the most convenient that I have used - no holes, no patches necessary!

Wet bells water dumbbells come at a cost of about forty dollars for the pair and are some of the most aesthetically pleasing dumbbells I have seen. They come in a variety of colors, purple being the most popular. They are soft to the touch and come in a variety of sizes. The soft grips provides a great base for water aerobics, and even small hands will find this an easy grip.

One of the cheapest pair of dumbbells is also the easiest to grip! For seventeen dollars, you can get a water dumbbell from Aquasphere in a great bright color like orange or green that is great in deep water. There is a cage around the dumbbell in the soft grip fabric that adds to resistance, but also makes the dumbbells easy to hold onto! For a higher intensity workout I would give these a try in a moment's notice. They look great, and have great results and at the low cost how could you go wrong?

Amazon offers a variety of water dumbbells, the traditional Styrofoam to add resistance to your water aerobics from Reebok are some of the most popular. With the wide handle, that provides an easy grip - the only downfall is the plastic that can be difficult to hold onto once it becomes slippery. For the low cost of twenty dollars per pair, these are the type found in most aquacise classes.
