Buying a House When You Have Ulcerative Colitis Takes Special Consideration

Casey L. Holley
Buying a house is a big step for anyone. For people who suffer from ulcerative colitis, buying a house has some very important considerations that may seem picky to some people. These considerations are, however, essential for the comfort of a person with ulcerative colitis.

The first consideration is the location of the bathrooms. If you are purchasing a two or more story house, you will need to be sure that there is at least a half bath on the main floor. Ideally, it should be close to the entrance you will use. For instance, if you have a garage, the bathroom should be close to the entryway from the garage.

Next, consider the location of the master bedroom. If you get weak during a flare up. I know that I do! You will need a bedroom on the first floor if you are buying a multilevel home. This will prevent you from having to climb stairs when you are weak. This will also make it easier for you to get to your bedroom if you have an accident.

The house should have a separate master bathroom. This will give you the comfort of knowing that you can take your time in the bathroom without preventing others from being able to use the bathroom or take a bath. This also gives you a private place to keep your emergency clean up supplies.

Now, in the master bathroom, a large bathtub with a shower is ideal. This shower can be a separate shower or it can be part of a tub/shower combo. If you are looking for ultimate comfort during a flare up, make sure that the master bathroom has a tub with water jets. These jets will massage you when you are soaking in the tub. Okay, so this is a luxury and it is a nice one even when you are not having a flare up.

Don't forget the padded toilet seat. This is one of my biggest comforts during a flare up. I love being able to sit on a soft seat, especially I know it will be while before I can get up!

Keep in mind that you may want an area in or right outside of the bathroom to relax during a flare up. You may not feel like being confined to bed all of the time during a flare up. Having a large bathroom or extra space in your bedroom for a comfortable sitting area would be a big plus in a house.

If you have an area big enough for an exercise ball or exercise mat, that is a major plus. Light exercise during a flare up can help control the symptoms.

Lastly, consider your comfort in the house. The more homey it feels, the better you will feel during a flare up.
