Buying Online Versus Real Shopping

Mark Mielke
Shop, shop, shop, shop, shop! People love to go shopping (especially teenagers). We are consumers by nature, especially our younger generation. Not to mention most of need shopping to meet the demands of everyday life. There are generally two major ways to shop, you can go to the store, examine each of the products that you are considering purchasing, and pick out the one you want the most and buy it, or you can get on the internet and buy everything you need from the comfort of your own home. But which way is better for shopping? Each method has it's own specific pros and cons. Let's take a look at some of them.

Buying your things in a store is obviously the way your parents and grandparents did it. It has many benefits over its online competitor. When you actually go to the store, you can observe each product you want to buy. You can take two different brands of the same thing and compare them right there. Not to mention you can actually leave the store with the product in your hand, whereas if you purchased it online, you would have to wait at a day or two before you received it. Maybe even up to several weeks. There is also no shipping and handling cost with store bought products, unless they are so large that you require handlers and/or a truck to move them.

On the hand, buying online offers a certain amount of comfort and convenience. When you shop online, you can do it from your own home. You do not even have to stand up and move around to buy the things you want. Online shopping also gives you access to far more products than a regular store would. While you may have to drive around to several department stores to compare different products, from your computer you can look at twice as many at a much easier level. Some disadvantages to online shopping are time and money. Online products tend to be cheaper until you add the inevitable shipping and handling cost. They also may take some time before they ship to your house.

What it comes down to, as it so often does, is a contest between comfort and money. On one hand, you can sacrifice your comfort and save money by buying from regular stores like Wal-Mart or Giant Eagle. On the other hand, you can sacrifice money for the comfort of buying from online stores like E-bay and Amazon. I personally like to use both. I think there must be a balance between needs and wants. Necessary items, such as food and clothing, should be bought at regular department stores. Desired items, such as movies and games, can be bought over the computer because they are not necessary and you can wait some time before you get them. But that's just my opinion. Everyone is free to choose as they please.
