Buying Practical Gifts for New Parents

Buying for new parents-to-be and their bundle of joy can be difficult and sometimes a bit confusing if you're not a parent yourself or it has been a long time since you've taken care of an infant. There are so many new and helpful products out there for parents that they may not even be sure where to start with building their supply of baby survival essentials. Talking with the new parents and jotting down a list of what they have prior to buying anything helps to ensure that they aren't getting multiples of items that they do not need and will most likely never get to use, especially baby gear. It's best if everyone who is going to purchase things for the child get together and do this, to cut down on discrepancies. Taking a look around baby and child care departments in different stores is a time consuming ordeal, but a definite must. This allows you to see what kind of innovative baby gear the market has to offer presently. Don't rule out online stores or auctions, as they have tons of items to offer, are usually well stocked, and offer discounts and promotions relatively often. Thrift stores shouldn't be frowned upon either, because they are full of all kinds of treasures for babies and small children without the big price tag. Keeping to the essentials is key when buying items that parents truly will need for baby. Remember that needs always trump wants in any situation.

Get a list from the parents of what they already have bought for their child, including the sex of the soon-to-be born (if they know), and get the names of everyone that they are aware will buy things for the infant and get into contact with them. The best idea is setting a date for which you can all get together and make a big list. Thus, everyone can pick and choose on what they would like to buy making it harder for multiples of the same type of items cluttering up the parents' home. No one needs three of the same kind of baby carriers, for example, one will be used and the others will sit and collect dust. After you have gotten your list, go to your local department stores look, and price the items you are buying for baby. If there are any online retailers or auctions that you know of, don't forget to check those out and see if they may have some type of deal that will save you money or have extras like free shipping. Go into any local thrift stores that you know of, or try to find out online or with information if there are any. Thrift stores are quintessential treasure troves of gently used or new items for baby to adult most times that cost pennies on the dollar when compared to department store prices. Most of the items here are probably barely used, because of the fact that babies grow so fast and hardly wear clothing before they are into another size. Another reason that you can find new or practically new clothing and gear at thrift stores for children is because of the multiple buying that people do when a child is born. As I mentioned before, too many of the same kind of item and inability to take the items back to the store for cash. In this case, the parents take the items to the resale shop because they don't need the extra items cluttering up their house, and they get a little cash off turning in the new items to the reseller. Go into one of these places and bam, you have a new carrier and stroller that match for $30 or a season's worth of clothing for $20.

Don't rule out buying essential items that will be used on a daily basis by new parents. Most people want to buy the cute stuff, like the toys and pick out clothing with cute sayings. In reality, the things that parents will need and go through the most of when the baby is born are diapering and bathing supplies. If just one person elected to buy nothing but diapers and bathing items, they could most likely help the parents through a whole month of those items without having to buy them. This is very helpful for parents, they can always use the extra money that they would otherwise spend on diapers. Having a baby is very expensive especially these days. Find out what kind of diapers, ointment, baby wash, and lotion they prefer for the infant. You can go to any major retailer and buy a case of diapers and either several tubes of diaper rash ointment or a case of it for fairly cheap. Tear-free wash, baby lotions, and powders will be used often as well and a good starter supply of those items can go into their diaper bag as well as their changing table supply. Buying for a baby doesn't have to be complicated, if you are practical with your choices.
