Buying a Used Car

Watch Out for Warning Signs!

Matthew Schieltz
Many people decide to buy used cars for a variety of reasons. Used cars can be purchased either from a dealership or from a private individual. However, both situations need to be examined very carefully. If you think that you will not get ripped off on a used car lot then you are sorely mistaken! Many individual used car lots raise the price of used cars thousands of dollars beyond how much they are actually worth! Private individuals will try to sucker you into buying their car just to make a quick buck! Fortunately, there are some things that you can do to stay on your toes and be prepared for the many tricks and deceptions that will come along just trying to entice you to buy that one used car.

Know The Basics

When you see a used car, the first thing that you absolutely do not want to do is to buy it on impulse or buy it based on how it looks from the outside. Even though many people may purchase a brand new car based on looks, this is simply not the way to go about it when buying a used car. In fact, looks are the least issue that one should be worried about when trying to decide on whether to buy a used car or not. What's under the hood, though, and other things, are crucial to purchasing a used car that will last a decent amount of time.

Use Guidelines

A good rule of thumb to follow comes with the issue of how much the asking price is. A buyer should expect a used car to run one thousand miles per every one-hundred dollars that it is purchased for. For example, let's consider that a used car is being sold for about $1500. That car should be able to last around 15,000 miles. Conversely, if a car is sold for $600 dollars then that car should expect to last for about 6,000 miles. This rule of thumb has held true in all of the used cars that I have purchased and I continue to stand by this principle when looking for a used car to buy.

Don't Forget to Test Drive!

Looking under the hood is not only a very important aspect to knowing if it's a decent used car or not, but test driving the vehicle is also crucial to deciding and figuring out if you would like to buy it. There may be some things that are suspicious that you'll only be able to figure out if you do test drive it! Being on the lookout for any suspicious squeals, kicks, or smoking should warn you to stay away!

All of these rules should help you to be able to pick out your next used car with caution! Unfortunately, many people do get ripped off everyday with used vehicles that are completely junk just because they don't do their homework and check the vehicle thoroughly. But by checking out every aspect of the vehicle you are assuring yourself that you have done your homework and are prepared to go home with a winner!
