Buying a Vacation Home in the Mountains of Georgia

Do you know where the first gold rush was in the USA? Nope, not California. It was in a little town called Dahlonega, Georgia which is where you will find the purest gold in the world, 99% pure gold.

It's a small town located about 45 minutes northeast of Atlanta. It's a Mayberry type of town. A special place that once you see it, you will feel like you have had a spiritual experience, a real calling to live there.

You feel like you are away from the rat race of your day to day living, yet you can easily feel connected again if you wish, because it has a lot of nearby conveniences.

Imagine yourself, sitting in your living room, looking down into your back yard that is like a mystical forest with a mountain view, enjoying the kaleidoscope of nature's beauty. The deer will come in your back yard along with the squirrels and a variety of song birds. You will see nature at its best as every animal teaches us how we can get along in this beautiful world. This is my escape every 6-8 weeks and it is leading me to be my permanent escape when I retire.

This area is growing fast. The values of homes are going up while other parts of the US they are going down. However, you can still get a lot of value for a home with acreage.

There is so much to do there and so much history. Just to name a few things that happens there:

You have many gold panning places to visit along with learning about how gold was discovered in 1828. There is still an operating gold mine that you can tour.

Learn about the "Trail of Tears" and how the Cherokee Indians were removed from their land to Oklahoma, leaving their gold behind. They knew about the gold way before the white man came.

There are many festivals that happen in Dahlonega. One of the most popular one happens in the fall when people from all over the world come for the "Gold Rush Days" which includes over 300 food, craft, and gift booths. There is clogging, pig calling and greased pole climbing and a contest to see who can pan gold the fastest. The people are so friendly that you have to stop and think, "Are we still in the USA?"

You have the largest waterfall in Georgia called the Amicalola Falls in the Amicalola Falls State Park nearby in Dawson County, seventeen miles from Dahlonega. This is also the beginning of the trail to the southern part of the Appalachian Trail.

The U.S. Army Rangers train there at Camp Merrill and have an open house in May.

There is also a nearby kangaroo conservation park that you can enjoy.

You are surrounded with a lot of outdoor activities within a 2 hour drive, from rafting on white water rapids, horseback riding, gem panning, tubing on a river to hiking up beautiful trails.

For a small town, it holds a big punch when it comes to things to do and see. So if you want a place where everyone knows your name, where everywhere you look you see a friendly face or hear a friendly greeting, then Dahlonega, Georgia is the place to be.

We went there last year. Make sure you call ahead of time to reserve a spot. You need to figure a 3 hour period in the park. They take you on a tour. You get to enjoy a contest to see who can throw the boomerang the furthest. Then you get a demonstration and information of all the types of Kangaroos. They are so cute. It's well worth the visit. They also have a friendly deer that walks right up to you.

I've spent a week in Dahlonega the past two summers, it's a lovely place. Didn't know about the kangaroo conservation park, will have to check it out this summer.
