Byron and Jack

Associated Content's Novel Opening Challenge

The first time Jack had met Dr. Byron Bartholomew Archer, the inventor had been hugging a robot. Jack would later learn the robot's name was Henry.

Jack had been attempting to rob Byron when they accidentally met and the pirate captain sadly learned the good doctor really had nothing worth stealing.

Except maybe Henry.

The scientist had seemed more amused than afraid by the pirate's antics and had asked for an introduction.
Jack didn't actually know his last name and after gaining quite a reputation as a pirate, was referred to by the police force as Outlaw Jack. He changed it to Jack Outlaw after inheriting an airship and the title of captain from a drunken card game. For flare, he had added an 'e.'

"Captain Jack Outlawe, Terror of the Skies!"

Byron thought the 'e' was stupid.

Jack thought Bryon's middle name was stupid, so they were even in his opinion.

Byron looked around his warehouse as the roar of police sirens penetrated the thin walls. "They found me!"

"They followed me!" Jack exclaimed at the same moment.

The two stared at one another.

"What do you mean, they found you?" Jack questioned, cocking his head sideways in a teasing manner.

Byron frowned. "What do you mean, they followed you? Terror of the Skies. What a joke."

"Yeah? Well, what makes you worthy of their attention? You're living in an abandoned warehouse with, with this thing." Jack pointed at Henry.

"Meh, mur, maoh," Henry bleeped.

"He is not a thing!" Byron protested, moving to stand in front of his creation in defense.

Police began storming the building, boots pounding against the cement floors, lantern beams bouncing off the walls and shouts and orders echoing nearby.

Jack cussed and turned, running towards the window he had broken on his way in. "What a waste of time!"

"Wait!" Byron called, reaching out.

Jack looked over his shoulder after climbing onto a crate, readying to jump. "You got nothin' worth taking, sorry for the intrusion!"

"You're apologizing for not being able to steal my things?" Byron questioned. He watched Jack frown and think about what he had just stated before asking, "take me with you?"

I particularly like the part about adding an "e" for flare.
