Cable Stitch Hat Pattern to Crochet

A Bit Different Than a Knit Cable, But Pretty Much the Same

Marie Anne St. Jean
This simple cable stitch isn't quite the same as that worked in knitting, but adds a similar effect and a decorative touch to a basic hat made with simple single and double crochet stitches. Pair this simple cable stitch hat with the matching scarf (pattern can be seen here) for a unique accessory that will keep anyone toasty warm when temperatures fall. Make them to coordinate with your own winter wardrobe, or in neutral colors to have on hand for gift-giving.

Materials needed for the hat:

Approx 2-2.5 oz worsted weight yarn
Size J crochet hook
Large needle to weave in ends

Abbreviations Used:

Ch = chain
Sp = space
St = stitch
SC = single crochet
DC = double crochet
SS = slip stitch

A photo tutorial of how to do the cable stitch in this pattern can be seen here.

Hat crocheted from this pattern as written should fit most women. Switching to a smaller or larger hook will adjust hat size accordingly.

Round 8: Ch 2 (counts as 1st DC), * DC each of next 3 st, cross over to the right of 3 DCs just worked and DC in bottom of ch 2/1st DC (this makes the cable stitch), sk 1, repeat from * to end, join with SS. (Note: Work the cable stitch over the 3 DCs fairly loosely so piece doesn't bunch up).

Repeat rounds 7 and 8 twice more, or until desired length. Finish with SC border, bind off, weave in ends.

    This is very pretty. It reminds me of broomstick lace. Thanks for the pattern.

    I covet your skill... never having gotten past weaving potholders out of cotton loops on a square 'loom' as a kid. All the women in my family knit, but I guess because I was a boy, I was never taught it. Maybe it isn't too late!
