Cable Stitch Scarf Pattern to Crochet

While not the same as the cable you see in knitting, this cable-like stitch is an easy way to make a special piece from simple single and double crochet stitches. Crochet a skinny scarf that's more decorative, or a wider one that will cover the face or shoulders to keep the wearer warm and snug while serving as a lovely fashion accessory. Who says scarves have to be boring?

Because the stitch itself is a bit fancy, you might find that this scarf is best crocheted using a solid color yarn as opposed to variegated. The beauty of the cable stitch can be lost in a camouflaged or variegated yarn fiber, depending on how many colors are involved and how 'busy'; the yarn is.

Abbreviations:

Ch = chain
St = stitch
SC = single crochet
DC = double crochet
Sk = skip

Starting chain of 18 with a size I crochet hook will work up a scarf approximately 5" wide. Increase or decrease in increments of 4 chains for a wider or narrower piece.

Cable Stitch Scarf Pattern

With I hook, chain 18.

1: SC in second ch from hook and each ch across. Ch 2, turn.

2: Skip st from turning ch, *1 DC in each of next 3 sts, cross over to the right of 3 DCs just worked and DC in skipped SC just prior to first DC, sk 1, repeat from *, ending with DC in top of turning ch . (Note: Work the cable stitch fairly loosely so piece doesn't bunch up). Ch 1, turn.

3: SC in each st across. Ch 2, turn.

Repeat pattern rows 2 and 3 to desired length. Add a SC border if desired to give your scarf a finished look.

Tip: Take a quick look as you end each row to make sure your cable stitches are lining up. I often find myself forgetting to skip the stitch between cables, which results in them being out of alignment. If you catch the error when completing that row, it's a lot easier to fix than when you have more of the scarf completed.

The first row of the cable stitch might seem difficult as the piece will twist a bit, but it becomes much easier after you work a few rows. Don't give up. I know you'll like the results.
