old house in a quaint village,
a museum of vintage dwellings
set apart.
Do shuttered windows veiled in lace
hold secrets of earlier serene existence?
Does intricate scroll-work on high peak
and corners of porch overhang
invite pilgrims to come inside?
Gaslight stands guard beside front drive,
defies darkness that creeps by night.
Upstairs, downstairs, do echoes ring
down hallways, across spacious rooms?
Does the sound of stillness collect dust
and memories too profound to let go?
Do ghosts with lighted candles still
shadow windows at dusk? Do they weep
in their grief, smile through their joy?
Can children be heard in the courtyard,
laughing in summer rain?
