In fact, of all of the avocados I've tasted from different growers, and I've tasted many avocados from different growers, I'd have trouble labeling Calavo Organic Hass Avocados even the second name in avocados, as far as taste goes.
That's a shame, since the price for a bag of Calavo organic Hass avocados was a really good one-about 17% less than an equal amount of even non-organic Hass avocados. Non-organic Hass Avocados cost on average about $1.50 to $2.00 per avocado. The Calavo Growers Inc. organic Hass avocado worked out to about $1.25 per avocado.
Note: Tip: whenever possible you should buy produce in a bag. It almost always works out to be cheaper than buying individual pieces of produce.
As far as the taste goes, it's not that Calavo Organic Hass Avocados tasted bad, or something. It's just that they didn't have much taste at all. That buttery, melt-in-your-mouth, hard-to describe, taste sensation you experience when eating an avocado wasn't there whatsoever. I don't believe I've ever eaten a plainer tasting avocado.
Everything else about them before eating them seemed normal: after cutting through the unblemished thick pebbly skin, revealing the beautifully green and yellow hues of the soft, creamy texture, the only thing amiss was the glass salad bowls to put them into for further preparation.
Nothing added to the avocados to help out the plain taste seemed to help either. More olive oil, more balsamic vinegar, more sea salt, more fresh cracked pepper, more Italian seasoning, none of these helped, and why should they help: if the avocado didn't start or spring forth with its inherent or naturally-occurring buttery, melt-in-your-mouth, taste, adding outside seasoning wasn't going to make it suddenly taste as if it had.
In conclusion, will I give Calavo another shot and pick up another bag of its avocados? More than likely, yes I will. It very well could have been just an odd avocado tree of the many avocado trees that are organically-farmed. Now, if I get another bag of Calavo Organic Hass Avocados and they taste every bit as plain as the first bag, then I know it's more than just an odd avocado tree or even a highly improbable coincidence that I picked up another bag from the same tree, even grove.
Then, while Calavo may be the "leading packer, grower, shipper of fresh avocados and related food products throughout the United States and worldwide," without question it will be apparent the most important reason a company would want to call itself "The First Name in Avocados," the taste of its avocados, Calavo has utterly missed it with its organic Hass avocados, at the least. And those are the most important ones of the whole lot of avocados!

Post a CommentAgreed, but it hasn't always been that way. I've been buying the 4 count organic Calavo's for about a year. Initially they were outstanding, both in terms of flavor and consistency. About mid-summer things changed for the worse. Like has been noted, virtually tasteless and an almost "watery" consistency. I left a voice mail with someone at Calavo in hopes of getting some answers, but have not heard back yet.
Good info!

Good report.
I really like the Hass avocados in guacamole, but you're right, they don't taste as great plain compared to other brands. Great review :)
