Calculating the Potential Cost of a Data Security Breach

L. Britnell
With data breaches occurring what almost seems daily, public and private sector executives are now turning an eye to the need for increased investment in their security policies and infrastructure. While each data security reach is unique, the cost to any organization can be absolutely devastating.

To provide organizations with a means to estimate their potential cost of a data security breach, Identity Theft America has developed a free online 'Data Breach Cost Calculator'. It is a simple online interactive tool for estimating the potential cost of a data security breach for any number of 'at risk' records. Simply type into the calculator the number of records, then click submit and the calculator will return you an estimated cost by itemized topics and then a total amount. The Identity Theft America Data Breach Cost Calculator can be found at www.IdentityTheftAmerica.com/databreachcalculator.asp

The formula used for this calculator is based on verifiable numbers from the Ponemon Institutes 2006 Self-Reporting Breach Survey. The result numbers shown in the Data Breach Cost Calculator are estimates only and provided for illustration purposes. Actual expenses and financial loss due to identity theft or data breach may vary based on a range of variables not contemplated in the calculator.

This calculator uses the Notification and Brand Impact data cost numbers from their 'Data Breach By Category Per Lost Record' for the line items shown in the calculator and it does not include possible State or Federal Fines. This calculator does not take into consideration expenses of a Class Action Law Suite.

Identity Theft America offers IDSafeBIZ. This program provides organizations with a means to prepare for a data breach and save thousands. When an organization joins the IDSafeBIZ program, they pay a small annual retainer and then if they experience a data breach, they only pay $2.00 per record.
