Calculus: Manipulating Infinity: Nothing x Everything = Something

The Proof that Nothing Times Everything Equals Something

A
Have you ever wondered what happens when you divide Zero by Infinity? Or multiply Infinity by Zero? Well, using the concept of the Limit from Calculus we can manipulate 0 and ∞ to find out the answer to these, and other, very interesting questions.

Before we can begin, we must first agree on one thing. This won't be hard for anyone who has taken first year Calculus, but I'll explain it so the rest of you don't fall off the wagon at the very beginning. Here it is:

limx → ∞1/x = 0

This is read "the limit of one divided by X, as X approaches infinity, equals zero." If you who have taken calculus, this is obvious, and you can jump ahead. For the rest of you, think about 1/x. What happens to it as X gets larger and larger (ie: as it "approaches infinity")?

Well, 1/10 = 0.1.
1/1,000 = 0.001.
1/1 billion = 0.000000001.

As you can see, as X gets larger and larger, the value of 1/x gets closer and closer to zero. Thus, if X gets infinitely large, then 1/x would get infinitely close to zero. Thus, 1/x = 0 when X approaches infinity. Okay, you're all caught up!

Now that we have another way to represent 0 (namely, limx → ∞1/x), we can do all sorts of stuff. Let's start simple:
What is 0 · 0?
Well, 0 · 0 = limx → ∞ (1/x) · (1/x)
Which simplifies to limx → ∞1/x2
Which = 0.
So, 0 · 0 = 0. No surprises there! But know that you understand the method, the other ones are easy to solve.

Here is another obvious one.
What is ∞ · ∞?
∞ · ∞ = limx → ∞ x · x = limx → ∞ x2 =
Thus, ∞ · ∞ = ∞.

Less obvious...
What is 0/?
0/ = limx → ∞ (1/x) ÷ x = limx → ∞1/x2 = 0
Thus, 0/ = 0.

Inverse of the previous:
What is /0?
/0 = limx → ∞ x ÷ (1/x) = limx → ∞ x2 = ∞
Thus, /0 = ∞.

Now for the strange:
What is 0/0?
0/0 = limx → ∞ (1/x) ÷ (1/x) = limx → ∞x/x = 1
Thus, 0/0 = 1.

And for the strangest of all:
What is ∞ · 0?
∞ · 0 = limx → ∞ x · (1/x) = limx → ∞x/x = 1
Thus, ∞ · 0 = 1.
So, everything times nothing equals something?

Now that is quite a surprise! Note that this new equation, ∞ · 0 = 1, can be solved for ∞ in terms of 1 and 0 to yield:

∞ = 1/0

Curiouser and curiouser! Division by zero is supposed to be undefined. Apparently not in to world of the infinite!

And, according to this last form of the equation, everything equals something divided by nothing. I would be a bad mathematician to suggest that this implies that everything in existence is One and the same Something. So i wont. But will someone please do it, because it sounds really cool?

This is another article I posted as a sophmore in college. I look back now and laugh about it. Oh how I wish I could delete articles that I sold to Associated content! :)

    sorry, but 1/infinity equals .0000000000000000000...1 not 0

This limit idea is valid. However, the way you have used the limits to "define" the indeterminate forms are not only misleading, but COMPLETELY wrong.

But then again, maybe that's why you published this under "poetry."

The indeterminate forms are the ones you have pointed out, which are peculiar and interesting to study. But the way to resolve this issue is "L'Hopital's Rule", which is simply using the derivatives of 2 functions to find the value at a limit.

    Example: let f(x) -> 0 and g(x) -> 0, if f'(x)/g'(x) -> L, then f(x)/g(x) -> L...

Thus, using only one function to define the indeterminate forms is completely meaningless and misleading to readers who don't have a further understanding of the subject.

Please do not post non-sense "mathematics" under the poetry section again.

well being of a spiritual and scientific mind I've always been facinated by numerology as compared to the metaphors in the old and new testament. Things like the word for god and light being equal, and the fact that light is the only thing proven to be able to create matter. Metaphors such as we are all the body of god, and the fact that we all originated in a big bang as the same thing as everything else. Then again I suppose the problem here I'd that youre talking about matching up science fact with allegorical myths. Don't get me wrong as I do believe in an intelligent creator, and I'm a Christian but it seems that religion and science are bound to clash, and I'll roughly quote the big guy, because evn the devil can use the word of god to prove a point
