Calf Born with Two Noses

Wisconsin Farmer Discovers Calf Born with Rare Deformity

R.E. Norton
Mark Krombholz did not notice anything unusual at first, but once he brought "Lucy," a newborn calf, into the barn and began feed her, the Lincoln County, Wisconsin farmer found something very unusual. Lucy had been born with two noses.

"I didn't notice anything too different until I got her into the barn," Krombholz told WAOW-TV. "All of a sudden I went to feed her a bottle of milk, and I thought maybe she'd been kicked in the nose and there were two noses there."

Krombholz called his breeder, specialist Scott Grund to come take a look at the newborn calf. "It looked like she was comfortable laying there in her bedding and breathing and spunky just like you want to see," Grund said, "It's just that she's got two noses." Grund added that both of Lucy's noses appear to working normally.

"It's a rarity. It's just a freak of nature is what you'd call it." Grund said breeders do keep track of such deformities, although mutations as rare as this generally do not occur as a result of genetics. He also said a form would be filled out to be filed and recorded in Shawano. "If, by chance, this would occur more than a few times, they would start looking at maybe the sire we're using." Grund has been breeding cows for almost thirty years, and in that time he has filled out about ten forms.

Lucy was born May 4. Because she was born on a hobby farm, she will be kept as a pet. Krombholz said that if Lucy is able, they will breed her just as they would any other cow.

Wow.... I wonder if he can smell twice as good as the other cows now. ;oP At least it's in a good location that doesn't make him look outlandish or causing him discomfort, tho, ay? Thanks for posting this and the photo, too! :o)

Crazy stuff. Did you read a while back about the kitten that was born with two faces? Seems as though things like this are happening a lot lately -- I wonder why? Good job with this article.
