California Couple Asks Wedding Guests to Donate to Ron Paul in Lieu of Gifts

Would you sacrifice your wedding gifts to better the chances of any of the current presidential candidates? According to the Ron Paul 2008 campaign, a California couple is willing to do just that for their favorite candidate.

The anonymous bride told the Ron Paul 2008 campaign staff that she happened to see Paul speak in Kansas City in June. She was "so impressed by what she had heard that not only was she going to vote for Dr. Paul, but wanted to do everything she could to see him become president." She told staffers that she has asked guests to her August wedding to donate to the Ron Paul campaign instead of giving traditional wedding gifts: "My honey and I are willing to forgo all manner of housewares and kitchen gadgets to help Ron Paul get elected. My mom doesn't know what to think, but I really want him to win -- it's that important to me."

What do the wedding etiquette experts say about asking your wedding guests to give to your favorite political candidate? Wedding website The Knot discusses this recent trend of couple's choosing to register for gifts for their favorite charity instead of traditional wedding gifts. However, the site does not recommend that couples ask guests to contribute to political campaigns: "Don't alienate guests by choosing a charity that flaunts your political beliefs. Instead, choose one that disperses the money to various organizations under one umbrella." The Emily Post Institute also guides against political giving as part of a wedding registry.

In recent postings to his website, Ron Paul discusses the need for additional campaign donations: "Because of people like you, I don't need the $100 million the establishment candidates will have. But I do need your help. $25, $50, $100, or even more--whatever you can send would do so much good, and be so much help.... We run on a comparative shoestring, and that has its advantages against the lumbering dinosaur operations of our opponents. We can be nimble and quick. But not without your help."

Whether or not this "Ron Paul wedding registry" is some sort of campaign stunt, Ron Paul's campaign appears to be gaining traction in the fundraising circuit. Although official second quarter fundraising numbers won't be available until July 15, Paul told George Stephanopoulos that he had raised $2.4 million in the second quarter. With $2.4 million in the bank, Paul's campaign would have more cash on hand than John McCain.

What a great idea! I would gladly do the same. I signed up as a Paul volunteer and have done some mailings as requested. I have the bumperstickers...yes, we Paul lovers are THAT passionate. No other candidate will change what our country has become. Both sides are more of the same...taxes, bigger govt, straying further from the Constitution. Our children, as adults, won't know freedom unless there is a revolution. Dr. Paul is our single best hope.

Any idea on how much they raised? Not that I'm a Paul supporter by any stretch of the imagination.

Campaign stunt? I doubt it, campaign managers can't think this kind of stuff up. Ron Paul's supporters ARE this passionate about him. America is at the point where if Ron Paul doesn't win, the downhill slide is just going to accelerate until its a 3rd world cesspool. It is worth a great deal of personal wealth to make that happen, or to know, even if you fail, at least you tried to make the country you live in a worthwhile place to raise your children.

Ron Paul is a breath of fresh air in a stinking field of status quo, ho-hum candidates. Good for the bride and groom and good that Americans can appreciate a man of principle. Did you know that he has refused to accept the taxpayer funded congressional pension? When was the last time you heard of a politician refusing any benefit?
