California 'Death Star' Super Laser to Create a Star on Planet Earth

Star Wars like Super Laser May Create Star Power Fusion on Earth

Lasers power up things we use daily like movie DVD players, or video games like Playstation and X-Box. They're used by physicians for medical procedures in surgery where laser scalpels are employed, or to correct vision by using a laser to fix a person's eyesight. Super sized and super powered versions are employed in sci-fi movies like uber destructive Death Star of Star Wars, or blasting away aliens in movies like Laserblast.

Now a similar type of laser powered device, in concept and even somewhat in look like a Star Wars Death Star, may help us solve global energy problems for good. This summer, scientists at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory will focus the world's largest laser on a gold capsule smaller than a thimble, hoping the hydrogen isotopes contained within will fuse together, exactly like what happens inside of a real sun. If they're successful, it will be a big step towards utilizing star powered fusion for our Earthly energy needs.

The starlight inspired fusion reaction, if it does happen at all, will not only be much smaller than the real thing out in the cosmos, but will also last a very short time - just 200 trillionths of a second. Still, it will provide researchers with the scientific building blocks of a real foundation to be able to extend a constant fusion reaction practical enough to be used in commercial situations. With enough time and investment, it's estimated such practicality will be achieved in about 20 years.

Despite the immense laser fired temperatures involved in carrying out this experiment, the safety of the undertaking is assured. The whole thing will be under strict control, with the actual fusing area encased by nearly 7 feet of concrete. "There's no danger to the public," said Lynda Seaver, spokeswoman for the project. "The [worst possible] mishap is, it doesn't work."

Laser high tech has been in our lives for years. We've harnessed lasers for entertainment, healthcare and even to help catch lead footed car drivers. Now thanks to the folks at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory, it seems the laser may help us power just about everything else - from our homes to our factories. In keeping with the sci-fi spirit and the whole Star Wars feel of this laser powered endeavor, we may start chanting, "May the laser fusion force be with you!"

Very interesting. It would be good if this were shown to be a new viable source of energy.

Within the fusion of science and science fiction, we often find truth. Fascinating.
