California: Long Beach Poly Wins Rare Trip South
Ricky Johnson Rushes for 189 Yards as Poly Beats Mira Mesa
The 5-10, 190-pound junior rushed for 190 yards on 21 carries as Long Beach Poly won its third-straight game after a season-opening loss to Santa Margarita.
Backfield mate Donovan Warren added 73 yards and a pair of scores on just nine carries.
Marauder senior quarterback Kevin O'Mary found UCLA-bound tight end Nate Chandler for Mira Mesa's touchdown.
The Jackrabbits held O'Mary to just 12 completions and 109 yards.
"We've never won a national title," Long Beach Poly coach Ralph Lara said. "We want to win out. But after that, it's out of our hands. There are other teams out there that are very good, including Mira Mesa."
Meanwhile, Chandler and his teammate, wide receiver Markques Simas, have been nominated to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl Jan. 6 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.
The two are among 400 individuals who will be nominated before the list is whittled to 80 players, 40 from the East and an equal number from the West.
