California Retains Title Among High Unemployment States

Lorraine Yapps Cohen
California still leads the pack in high unemployment. With that dubious distinction, California even pulls above the pack over Michigan. Once the leader of states, California has become the leader of losers when it comes to employment.

That's right. Michigan has crossed the line on the chart. Its unemployment lowered below California's levels. For the last six months, the state noted for deep recession from government takeovers yielded title to California. Michigan unemployment at about 10% favorably compares to California's at 12.5%.

In fact,Michigan joins Texas and Arizona as a destination state for businesses that began in California. Business heading out of California has accelerated lately, with 70 firms leaving California in 2011 alone. Five more leave soon, with Michigan in the cross hairs as the landing zone.

At this rate, California is headed for evacuation. No, not from earthquakes, tsunamis, wildfires, or other environmental scares, but from the threat of economic demise. We'll watch as people and businesses depart.
