California: Unfriendly to Business

Reality or Mere Perception?

Lorraine Yapps Cohen

Oh, this is priceless! Gavin Newsom will try to change the perception of California being unfriendly to business. Perception is reality, Mr. Lieutenant Governor, as if that perception weren't true!

It's no secret that there's a big business exodus out of California. Companies are pulling up roots in the Golden State and relocating to places like Texas, Arizona, Florida, Virginia, North Carolina, even Utah and Idaho. In fact, businesses are departing five times faster than they were just two years ago.

Not surprisingly, moving out has been in the crosshairs of struggling California businesses for awhile. But neither the Governor nor state legislators have taken much notice as they pile more taxes upon taxes on business. Similarly, regulatory agencies strangle business with restrictions more restrictive than ever. The state has business in a death grip.

While the powers that be took no notice, important employers in the state, such as Paypal and Carl's Jr. restaurants, moved operations out. Not surprisingly, the jobs waltzed out of state too, only to relocate anywhere besides California. Following the work, unemployed Californians are making their homes elsewhere, seeking the jobs California forced out.

Some California legislators, however, read the writing on the wall. CA State Assemblyman Dan Logue organized a trip to Texas to learn how states create jobs. Mostly Republican state legislators went on the trip, but Gavin Newsom, a died-in-the-wool Democrat, tagged along. We all thought he might learn something from Governor Rick Perry's Texas.

But that thought was bashed with Newsom's statement today. In hopes that he would get the message that the state of California overtaxes, overburdens, over-regulates, and overwhelms business--to the point of driving it out--we discover now that it is the perception of those maladies that need to be changed. Of all things! This, according to our illustrious Lieutenant Governor. This is proof positive that Newsom exists in some fantasy world!

And it tells me that there really is no hope for California. With leadership like that, who needs enemies? California has declared economic war on itself and should succeed pretty well in its own destruction.
