California Weekend Getaway - Sacramento

Rushelle McDermott
Not sure what to do with your weekend? Take a weekend trip to Sacramento. The capitol of California offers a wide range of activities for both the young and the old.

Underground Tour Old Sacramento

If you're visiting Sacramento during the summer, escape the heat by taking a tour of Old Sacramento underground and hollow sidewalks. According to the tour's Web site, "Sacramento is the only city in California to raise its streets, and one of only a handful to do so in the entire nation."

This is brand new and exciting tour that is being offered. The Historic Old Sacramento Foundation began giving the tour on July 10, 2010. Tours are offered hourly between the hours of 10:00am - 6:00pm (Thursday through Sunday). The last tour starts at 5:00pm. The price is $15 per adult and $10 per youth. Each tour is approximately 45 minutes.

California State Railroad Museum

Take advantage of your time in Sacramento by visiting the California State Railroad Museum. It is the largest in the nation. You can find the musuem in Old Sacramento at the corner of I and 2nd Street. The museum is open daily between the hours of 10:00am - 5:00pm.

You are allowed to take personal pictures within the museum. There are plenty of exhibits to snap photos of, so don't forget your camera.

You also have a chance to ride a steam train if you visit the museum. The California State Railroad Museum offers train rides every weekend from April to September. The price is $9 per adult and $4 per child (6 years - 17 years). Children five and under ride for free. The excursion is a six-mile roundtrip ride along the Sacramento river.

If you plan to go on the excursion on a hot day, you may want to consider upgrading to first-class ($15 per person). The first-class car has air conditioning and treats, while others cars don't.

Tour the Capitol

Since Sacramento is the capitol of California, why not take a tour of the Capitol building? It's free and hey, you may get lucky and spot Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger figuring out how to save California.

This is a great tour to take because it's free to roam the building. The building is open on weekdays between 8:00am - 5:00pm and on weekends between 9:00am - 5:00pm. There is a gift shop and restaurants located in the basement of the building. Parking is easier to find on the weekends since state workers are at home. Metered parking is located all along the streets of the Capitol.

Sacramento is a lovely city. It's not too far from where I live, so I can pop over there whenever I want to.
