Call of Duty is famous for its epic depictions of the World War II era. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is a re-imagining of the best-selling series. As a result, developer Infinity Ward decided to bring the series into the more current setting, which made everything feel fresh.
One of the main components to the success of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is the graphics. The game runs at a smooth 60 frames per second on the PC, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. It managed to stay consistent despite some highly impressive but taxing special effects. Two years later, many still considers it one best-looking first-person shooting games.
The other main component to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare selling 14 million copies worldwide so far is the online multiplayer. The game features a deep mode with level progressing and customizable characters. While the depth caters to the hardcore, the simple shooting interface makes it accessible to the mass market. Thus, the game became a big hit.
In a somewhat curios move, publisher Activision will now be porting Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare to the Nintendo Wii. Infinity Ward won't be developing the port, however, as they are currently working on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on the PC, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.
Instead, Treyarch will be responsible for the port. Many fans in the series would recognize the game development company as the one responsible for Call of Duty 3 and Call of Duty: World at War. Both of which were ported to the Nintendo Wii at launch by Treyarch.
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare on the Nintendo Wii will pose several challenges for the development company. For one, the graphics would have to be downgraded on the Nintendo Wii. It would be interesting to see if Treyarch can keep the vital 60 frames per second frame rate. The online multiplayer can also be a challenge as the Nintendo Wii isn't as open as the other platforms in terms of online features.
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare will be released on the Nintendo Wii on November 10, 2009. This is the same exact day Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will be first available on the PC, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.
