Treyarch Drops a Napalm Strike Over the Market

The most recent Call of Duty game, Call of Duty: Black Ops, created by Treyarch and published by Activision, has earned over $1 billion in sales within less than 2 months, Gamespot.com reports. According to their reports, the only other entertainment-based product or production to break these limits so abruptly is James Cameron's sci-fi wonder Avatar.

Call of Duty: Black Ops, which was released on November 9th, 2010, is a first person shooter, just like it's predecessors in the series. The single player campaign in this game plays like that of a movie, as there is a lot of action in it to keep players on their toes. However, a large chunk of the player population plays for the online multiplayer, a realm where gaming skills are put to the test against other players from around the world. And, of course, who could forget another reason as to why this game was so successful - the ever so popular return of Nazi Zombies - a game mode where 1-4 player(s) are pitted against waves of hordes of zombies. The original zombie mode, a mere idea that has exploded since it's initial launch, started when Treyarch implemented it in their previous game Call of Duty: World at War .

Revenue came in quicker than a boosting RC-XD, with 5.6 million units selling within 24 hours of the initial launch for a staggering earning total of $360 million. Within the first five days of release revenue continued to soar, with sales reaching over $650 million, making it the highest selling game of the year.

What does this all mean in comparison to the last installment in the Call of Duty series? Well, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, was stated to be the highest selling game in the series with a total earning report of $310 million on the first day and $550 million within the first five days of it's initial release. That means that Call of Duty: Black Ops overshadowered Modern Warfare 2's release date sales by $50 million and $100 million within the post five day sales, making it the newest highing selling game in the series.

In comparison, Bungie's Halo Reach, the futuristic first person shooter, hit $200 million worth of sales on it's first day of sales, and was considered to be the highest selling initial launch game of the year prior to the release of Call of Duty: Black Ops.
