"Call of Duty: Black Ops" Online Multiplayer - First Day Impressions and Review

Call of Duty: Black Ops had a large spectrum to cover when it spawned into the realm of gaming. Treyarch, the developer of Black Ops, as well as one of the previous installments in the Call of Duty series, World at War, had a large burden to augment their game due to the the sheer success of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and it's in-depth online experience. Ask any fan - Call of Duty has been mainly about the multiplayer online portion, where gamers either gain supremacy over others, or have their souls broken by a Napalm Strike while they're trying to capture a point in Domination in a close game. Thankfully, Black Ops seems to have done something right (as of right now), for the most part.

Maps
The maps online seem pretty good - there's a lot of open and enclosed areas creating a medley of differentiated combat. The only problem that I've seen so far is that when voting on the maps the same choices seem to pop up constantly, so you'll be playing the same maps a lot. However, the cosmetics of each map is very appealing to the eye. There are plenty of places to hide, and there are plenty of means of egress to get to those pesky campers.

Guns and Equipment 8.5/10
The guns, one of the most important aspects of the game, are pretty good, too. I've only unlocked a handful of guns, but the Enfield, the first fully automatic assault rifle that you can buy, is a great choice. You start out with default classes that start with (as primaries) a sub machine gun, an M16, a shotgun, or a sniper rifle. I was never a fan when it came to SMGs or shotguns, and I was never the best shot with a sniper rifle - leaving me with the M16 as my most viable choice.The guns shoot pretty smoothly overall, and getting a grip for landing shots is acquired after a couple of games online.

Attachments for the guns are plentiful - from flamethrowers and grenades launchers to the favorable red dot sight and a reflex sight. However, keep in mind that attachments, like many other obtainable items in the game, must be unlocked at certain levels AND bought using your accrued Call of Duty money.

The equipment (which can be seen here) in Black Ops adds another element to the gameplay. Rather than just having the general flashbangs, smoke grenades, and frag grenades, Black Ops has added other items such as the Decoy Grenade - a grenade that, when thrown, will emit noise like that of a gun firing, making enemies think that you, or one of your teammates, are at that specific location. Another item, labeled equipment, is the Camera Spike - a camera that a player can place in any area to watch that location. However, the trade-off is that you lose your mini-map to see the screen for the camera.

The main problem with the guns, at least that I can tell so far, is that some of the SMGs are slightly overpowered, especially in close quarters combat when someone is using Lightweight. After about four hours of online gameplay I can honestly say this, as about 95% of the time there would be a guy that would barrel around a corner with an SMG they'd take me out. I'd shoot, he'd shoot, he'd take me out, despite me landing about 2 or 3 shots into his chest. A problem in the previous game, Quick-Scoping, has been addressed by Treyarch, and is practically gone, at least compared to how it was in Modern Warfare 2 where every other person was running and gunning with a sniper rifle.

Customization - 10/10
But let's stay positive - it's only the first day. One favorable element of Black Ops is the in-depth customization, from emblems to gun attachments. The customization in this game is insane, as players, after unlocking it, can add customized face paint to their characters and even add their emblems to their guns. Emblem customization is especially deep since there is an array of "layers" that can be bought and altered. And, of course, you're able to customize which killstreaks you use and your armory.

Killstreaks - 9/10
Was that killstreaks I just said? Well yes, yes it was. Killstreaks in this game are plentiful, and they're pretty cool. Overall I haven't seen any balance issues when it comes to killstreaks. The dogs in this game, compared to the dogs in World at War, are more powerful (probably because they're an 11 killstreak). I've been killed in one bite multiple times, and on occasion two bites. The SAM Turret (a 4 killstreak) works wonders against enemy aircrafts, but one must keep in mind that it can be destroyed by an enemy with a mere knife. One of the newer killstreaks, the Napalm Strike, seems wonderful so far. The way in which it is used is like the Precision Airstrike or the Stealth Bomber in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, as you pick the direction in which the airstrike takes place. And, to top it all off, the napalm burns for a few moments afterwards, which may net some kills, too.

But the best part of killstreaks? The fact that kills netted by killstreaks doesn't count towards your killstreak itself, as it did in Modern Warfare 2 and other previous Call of Duty installments. What that did (killstreak kills counting towards killsteak for the next killstreak) was encourage camping, which people did do (in abundance) in Modern Warfare 2. What a lot of players did was use the Harrier, Chopper Gunner, Nuke combination, so all they'd have to do, in theory, was get seven kills, hide, lay the Harrier down and wait for the necessary kills, get into the Chopper Gunner, and just blow people away. Sadly, many time this tactic was successful. Luckily, Treyarch discontinued the Nuke for Black Ops, a great decision for overall gameplay.

Stats - 10/10
Holy statistics! There are so many stats in this game it's hard to even comprehend. Treyarch even added graphs to some of the statistics as well. There are even heat maps for where you died the most in a certain game, a diagram of where most of your shots landed on enemies in the past game, a graph that shows how many times you've used certain killstreaks, and so much more that it's mind-boggling. This is one of the aspects I love most about Treyarch - they know people want to know their stats. And not only do people know the stats they wanted to know, they know more.

Nazi Zombies - 10/10
One of the most famed elements of Call of Duty: World at War was clearly Nazi Zombies. What was once a mere thought that turned into a minigame exploded into a full-blown side project that gamers from all over embraced. Honestly, everyone loves zombies and everyone loves killing zombies, so this game mode is the perfect combination. Add in perk machines, upgrades, a gloomy (yet beautifully detailed) environment, a large array of guns, and the inclusion of three buddies and you're set for a good time.

In this game you start off in a lobby with two floors. All four people are in the same room and there are two ways to make egress to the next areas. I don't want to spoil it for you, but it's very fun. However, it seems much harder in this game, and Treyarch has come up with increasingly crafty ways for zombies to surprise you.

As of right now there's only one Nazi Zombie map available to gamers who bought the regular version of the game.

The Flip Side - What Treyarch Did Wrong
I truly love this game already. The looks, the game play, the feel - it's all above par for a first person shooter. However, most games are not completely perfect. Some of these things Treyarch should have picked up on when Infinity Ward messed them up in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

1.) The Knifing System - In Modern Warfare 2 the knifing system was completely broken. Add in the perk that most people used for their third slot - Commando - and they had what should have been titled
"Call of Duty: Knife Warfare". In Black Ops it's not as bad, but there is still an unneeded lunge that adds a lot of frustration to the gameplay. In Modern Warfare 2 a vast amount of players used what was known as an "MLC" combo, which was the use of the three perks Marathon, Lightweight, and Commando. This class allowed players to run around, non-stop, at an increased speed, and stab people even when they were 10 feet away from the "MLC" user. This tactic generated a lot of hate, as people mid-lunge seemed to be invincible, and generally came out on top in a one on one battle. 2.) Hit Detection - This has been a problem in some of the past Call of Duty games. Sometimes you'll see a guy, shoot at him and get that head shot you definitely got. Then there's other times where you shoot at a guy, and nothing registers, or it barely does. This has happened to me a few times, and it may be due to lag thanks to the high influx of players currently playing (it is a new game and all).

3.) Frag Grenades - I feel like every other thrown item seems fine (so far), but the frags, even when thrown at a 45 degree angle, go less than 30 feet. The frag grenades need a distance (not power) buff.

4.) Better Matchmaking - I am not Network Specialist, but I know gaming. One thing that has haunted the Call of Duty series lately is the matchmaking and the Host Migration system. The quality of gameplay is diminished by constant lag and constant stops during mid-game when someone leaves or, for whatever reason, the game needs to find a better host. Lag is running rampant in many games, but this may be due to the high amount of players on the servers.

5.) Tactical Insertion - This is one of the biggest mistakes that was ever made in a game - the Tactical Insertion. The Tactical Insertion is a piece of equipment that allows a player to drop a marker where they want to respawn once they die. Despite the fact that this idea had great potential for objective games and the like, it was abused by "boosters", which were players that would set these insertions with friends to and allow one person to kill all of them to boost their kill to death ratio, or for other reasons. However, it may not be as big of a deal in this game because players in Modern Warfare 2 primarily did it (nine times out of ten) to get a Nuke (a 25-killstreak). In Black Ops there is no Nuke. It was a risky move putting this in, and I don't see any benefit of it. It has also been stated that any player seeing others boosting should record it in the Theater Mode and send it to Treyarch so they can take care of it.

Overall, Black Ops is a great game. Yes, it basically is the same concept of every other Call of Duty game that has come out, but it has added and tweaked some elements to make this a game worth owning. Any fan of Call of Duty and/or first person shooters is recommended to purchase this game.
