Call of Duty: Black Ops Sales Hit Records in US and UK

Call of Duty: Black Ops has proven many things over the last few days since its massively successful release earlier this week on November 9, 2010. According to Activision , the company that makes Call of Duty: Black Ops, this game "has had the biggest entertainment launch in both the US and UK" with 5.6 million copies sold and $360 million in Black Ops sales the first day.

Recession? What recession? Obviously consumers have enough disposal income on hand to have not only the gaming systems needed, but approximately $54 from Amazon.com to purchase the Black Ops game and the free time to play it. By the way, if you want to purchase it at Walmart the price is $59.96 or at Best Buy it will run you $59.99.

The Black Ops sales have topped the highly touted release last year of Modern Warfare 2, it sold 4.7 copies in the first 24 hours. Black Ops even beat out the launch of Avatar. It is being projected that Black Ops may be the highest grossing entertainment release ever. But that may be more hype than reality, we will see.

The Activision CEO Bobby Kotick said , "There has never been another entertainment franchise that has set opening day records for two consecutive years and we are on track to outperform last year's five-day global sales record of $550 million. The game's success underscores the pop culture appeal of the brand."

For a little perspective look at it this way, the first day sales for The Twilight Saga: New Moon and the Eclipse releases combined made $140 million, The Dark Knight brought in $67 million, Transformers Revenge of the Fallen was $62 million and Spider Man 3 followed all of them with $59 million. So all five of these launches total about $328 million. That is short of the launch day sales of Black Ops by about $32 million.
