Call of Duty: World at War, or WAW as it is affectionately called by its fan base, is a first person shooter. Call of Duty developed was by Treyarch, and published by Activision. It was released on Nov. 11, 2011 in North America, on Xbox 360, PS3, PC, and WII.
It was the last Call of Duty game to take place during World War II. In the game, there are two separate campaigns actually.
In one campaign, you step in the boots of a marine starting out on Makin Atoll, and eventually the game ends on Okinawa. The second campaign follows a Russian solider from Stalingrad to the roof of the Reichstag in Berlin. The campaign is highly historically accurate.
Game modes are mostly generic with the game. Layers have their choice of playing a death match, a team death match, or a exciting game of capture the flag.
The multiplayer introduced weapons that were not specifically for the countries using them. For example Japanese solider can use a Russian rifle in an online match.
One thing this game did introduce which was very cool in my opinion was a cooperative game mode called Nazi Zombies. It pitted one to four players against hoards of Nazi zombies, for a classic arcade survival game. Points are awarded for killing zombies and rebuilding barriers if they are destroyed. This is the main selling point for the game for many players. It is fun killing zombies.
Players are given a pistol to start, but other weapons are spread throughout areas that players spend points to purchase. Extra ammo and grenades may be purchased as well.
World at War was given three map packs before Treyarch finished developing extra content for it. A spinoff named World at War Final Fronts was released on PS2. This version was developed by Rebellion Interactive, and published by Activision. The game was developed using the Call of Duty 3 engine, instead of the engine used in the other version of World at War games. This of course meant worse graphics which simply paled in comparison. This version also excluded online multiplayer, and the Nazi Zombies game mode that players loved.
