Callaway Diablo Edge Tour Driver Review

New Look, Same Great Performance!

MikeBabjak
A few years back Callaway Golf introduced a "Tour Authentic" line of golf clubs. These clubs were supposed to be the same quality that players on Tour were using. The first thing that caught everyone' eye was that the TA Driver had a hosel! Yes a hosel on a Callaway driver! A more stable feeling club head, and for some more accuracy was now available, but at a price. The TA drivers cost upwards to $700!

Fast forward to 2010 and there is a cost effective solution to the above problem. The Diablo Edge Tour. This club features a smaller head, very classic looks and yes, a hosel. The club head itself is a 4 piece all titanium driver with Callaway's Hyperbolic Face for accuracy and distance at impact. An Aldila Habanero shaft compliments the attractive club head well and has been a popular stock offering.

The club itself looks amazing. The fact that Callaway put the time and money into bringing in a Tour version of the Diablo line was one thing, but to make it look this clean at address is impressive. It looks similar to the FT Tour driver which I will review later, and really is like nothing else they have ever put out. Unlike most companies "Tour" drivers, this one actually gets some play on tour and the 1.5* open face also contributes to the "players" look.

The feel, for me anyways, is a little harsh. Keep in mind I've been playing the FT 9 Tour for a little while, and anything with the Fusion Technology is going to have a softer sensation and that feel that the ball pops off the club face. That said everything else about this club is a winner. The distance, workability, and trajectory in the Diablo Edge Tour driver are superb. I hit a 10.5* with stiff shaft, similar specs to my FT 9 Tour and the ball flight was just as good. A high launch that flattens out and flies forever with a little roll at the end! This club is by far the easiest "Tour" model to hit and is sure to be a huge success for Callaway.

Overall I'd recommend giving this club a try. It is worth the $299 price tag in the fact that it looks and performs as a better players club without having to spend $400 to $600 dollars on it. Great job Callaway!
