Callaway Fusion Wide Sole Iron Review

Long and Forgiving!

MikeBabjak
Callaway is doing it again with its large, oversized irons. The Fusion Wide Sole irons promise to be not only the largest clubs you have hit in a while, but the highest and logest hitting as well! If you can get over the look of these shovels, you may fall in love with them!

The Fusion Wide Sole irons are designed for the high handicap and Senior player. Callaway has had a lot of success with the first generation of Fusion irons in the early 2000's, they have made these even better! They do look bulky, and yes, there is a lot of offset there, and yes they are huge, but these puppies soar! The wider sole is used for two purposes. One, to move weight low and behind the ball by adding Tungsten to the sole, and Two, to prevent fat shots. The thick top line and Titanium face add to the distance of these clubs and I can guarantee that you will be picking up a lot of distance with these irons. The lofts are quite a bit less, almost a club stronger per iron, but all that Tungsten placed down there on the back half of the sole keeps the trajectory up for each club. These hogs will be back for 2008 along with a few new products in the X series. Stay tuned for reviews!

These irons were flat out long when I hit them. All that technology really shows in these irons as I was hitting some bombs down the driving range. I got over the look a little sooner than I thought, but for a little less money, the MacGregor NVG2 Mid iron has the same features in a little cleaner look. I could not work the ball with these irons as that is not what they are designed to do. I could hit a nice high draw of course, but no fades or low balls here, just high, long rockets down to the green! Overall, its a great iron that I would suggest to those who need more forgiveness, distance and trajectory. A lot of tour players use the Big Bertha iron 2 iron as their "hybrid", this may be an option for you with the Fusion Wide Sole as these irons really get the ball up in the air for you easily.
