Callaway X Forged Iron Review

A True Players Club from Callaway

MikeBabjak
Callaway golf has long been known for its long, forgiving drivers. They started the oversize driver rage in the early 90's with their original Big Bertha driver and have since seen over 10 new drivers come out since then. Over the years, Callaway has gone from simple hickory shafted wedges to some of the most technologically advanced golf equipment on the planet. Callaway has continued its dominance in the mid to high handicap market with its line of drivers, throw in their irons, wedges, and recent purchase of Top Flite and Odyssey Golf, new "players" equipment and a great line of Callaway branded golf balls and you have the makings of a monster that will now be in the forefront of golf technology and design for years to come.

The X Forged irons are true "players" clubs. Callaway has not made an iron this close to a blade since the old Bobby Jones irons of the early 90's. The sleek, thin top line with less offset through the entire set really sets up to the eye of the better player. The notch weighting in each iron positions the clubs center of gravity perfectly for each club and provides the player a little added forgiveness on off center hits. There are many custom options available for this iron, like most Callaway products, and fitting through a Callaway club fitting center takes only a half hour or so. This has been a great club in Callaways lineup and will be back in 2008 along with a blade model as well, yes, thats right, a blade from Callaway! Stay tuned for that review!

The first thing I noticed when I set one down was how good they look! From 3-PW, this set looks great. The clubs are so consistent from one to another I forgot that a forged cavity back could look so good! The feel of these irons were a little bulky. I tested a set with the Rifle Project X in a 5.5 stiff flex. They felt great at impact and working the ball with these irons was a piece of cake. The one hangup I had however was that I was loosing about 5 yards per club. As I said, they were a little bulky meaning they were heavy. I would suggest this iron to the better, harder swinging player who likes to work the ball. If you want to keep your distance with this set, look into having the lofts tweaked a little and a lighter shaft installed, other than that, this is one sweet club!
