Callaway X Forged Wedge Review

Classic Wedge with New Technology

MikeBabjak
Callaway golf has long been known for its long, forgiving drivers. They started the oversize driver rage in the early 90's with their original Big Bertha driver and have since seen over 10 new drivers come out since then. Over the years, Callaway has gone from simple hickory shafted wedges to some of the most technologically advanced golf equipment on the planet. Callaway has continued its dominance in the mid to high handicap market with its line of drivers, throw in their irons, wedges, and recent purchase of Top Flite and Odyssey Golf, new "players" equipment and a great line of Callaway branded golf balls and you have the makings of a monster that will now be in the forefront of golf technology and design for years to come.

The X Forged irons are designed for the mid to low handicap player. Callaway has had a lot of success with the X Series beginning with the X-12's in the late 90's and once Roger Cleveland came on board in the early 2000's, they began to make a great forged wedge under the X brand. The clean look of these wedges are a hit with traditionalists and are much softer than the old Big Bertha Tour Wedges of the 90's. They feature a multi grind sole for a better setup position from most lies and new MD Grooves for increased spin around the greens. These babies are being updated for 2008 along with a few new products in the X series. Stay tuned for reviews!

These wedges were a lot of fun to work with, especially around the greens. The deep grooves and soft heads made the ball come to a stop quickly out of almost any lie. Hitting full shots with these wedges were also a joy. I could hit them hi or low with no problem, and the ball flight and distance were very consistent from shot to shot. The only issue I did have with the X Forged wedges were that the grooves, while great, were tearing up range balls! I'd hate to put a PROV1 in front of these babies, the cover might come clean off! Overall, its a great wedge that I would suggest to anyone. If you are looking for more Callaway Golf products, check out my other articles on the X20, X Forged, Big Bertha and Fusion irons!
