Callaway X20 Tour Iron Review

Not Ready for a Blade? Here is Your Go Between!

Callaway golf has long been known for its long, forgiving drivers. They started the oversize driver rage in the early 90's with their original Big Bertha driver and have since seen over 10 new drivers come out since then. Over the years, Callaway has gone from simple hickory shafted wedges to some of the most technologically advanced golf equipment on the planet. Callaway has continued its dominance in the mid to high handicap market with its line of drivers, throw in their irons, wedges, and recent purchase of Top Flite and Odyssey Golf, new "players" equipment and a great line of Callaway branded golf balls and you have the makings of a monster that will now be in the forefront of golf technology and design for years to come.

The X20 Tour irons are designed for the mid to low handicap player. Callaway has had a lot of success with the X Series beginning with the X-12's in the late 90's. The clean look of these irons are a hit with traditionalists as these irons are not as bulky as the Big Bertha line of irons, or the X20's for that matter. The notch weighting in each iron positions the clubs center of gravity perfectly for each club and provides the player a little added forgiveness on off center hits. The weight taken from he cavity is also pushed back and away from the face for better launch angles and even more forgiveness. Slightly thinner sole angles, a more compact head and less offset complete a "players" club appearance with the forgiveness of the X20's cavity. There are many custom options available for this iron, like most Callaway products, and fitting through a Callaway club fitting center takes only a half hour or so. This has been a great club in Callaways lineup and have been used by many tour players on the Sr. and Ladies tour, including Annika! These babies will be back in 2008 along with a few new products in the X series. Stay tuned for reviews!

When I tried these irons I was very impressed. They had a great look when I set the ball down and came with high end Rifle Project X shaft. They felt great at impact and took off with a mid trajectory. Working the ball was easy given the less offset and more neutral weighing, there was nothing I could not make these irons do. I would suggest this iron to the mid to low handicap player who likes a clean look with some game improvement features built in! If you need something a little more or less forgiving, check out my other articles on the X20, X Forged, Big Bertha and Fusion irons!
