Callies Candy Kitchen and Callies Pretzel Factory in Mountainhome, PA

My Picks for the Poconos!

Abby Greenhill
On your next visit to the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania, be sure to stop by Callies Candy Kitchen and Callies Pretzel Factory. If you are going there for the day or a week, for the beautiful mountain scenery, fishing or shopping, nothing fits better with those activities than delicious chocolate. Callies chocolate is famous in that area and once you try it you will be hooked.

The first time my husband took me to the Poconos, all I heard about was Callies Candy Kitchen. He had been there several times and he raved about their chocolate. I couldn't wait to get there. When we pulled up there was hardly a place to park. We didn't give up and eventually found a place to park and went inside. I was in what I would describe as candy heaven!

As soon as you enter the store you will be overcome with the luscious and delicious smell, the smell of chocolate. I am a dark chocolate fan and I usually scope out all the dark chocolate items first. Being a pretzel lover, the idea of dark chocolate covered pretzels was right up my alley.

When you walk through the candy store, you will go from one amazing candy-filled room to another. They have much more than just chocolate, so it is a candy store for everyone with a sweet tooth. If you need gifts or you want candy for yourself, Callies has something for everyone.

By the time we left on that first visit I had spent about $50, and I could easily have tripled that amount. When we got outside the door I sat down on the steps and tore into the dark chocolate covered pretzels. My husband said I looked like a kid in a candy store, and I was!

Later that evening, after visiting come candle shops we wondered what Callies Pretzel factory would be like. Guess where we went the next day? The pretzel factory is 3 miles down the road from the candy kitchen.

They make soft pretzels and regular pretzels. I remember vividly watching the soft pretzel demonstration and waiting patiently for that first pretzel to come out of the oven. I know that I slathered mustard on it and dug in! I didn't go overboard buying pretzels, just a 'few' to tide us over until dinner.

Check out both of the websites, as the photos speak louder than words. It is too bad computers don't have smell-a-vision! Check out their on-line ordering if you don't think you will be able to visit in person.

The next time you hear the words, Pocono Mountains, think of Callies Candy Kitchen and Callies Pretzel Factory. Don't forget all the candle shops and the outlet mall out on the highway, but be sure to visit Callies first, or last, you won't be sorry!
