Calling All Job Seekers...Is This the Road to the American Dream or Nighmare?
Job Seekers Want a New Job They Will Love. What is Keeping You from Getting That?
Most companies have a 90 day probation period, so that you each can try the job on for size and see if it's a good fit. Consistantly, we all feel that we put our best foot forward and come in on time; became a team player, are well liked and do a very good job in the position you were hired for. Until one day about 91 days to 200 days later, you have to come in to the office for a meeting. There is no agenda, no details, just be there. You go in and are met by your boss and Human resources with a stack of documents to sign. Seperation papers are pushed in front of you. You're in shock, you sign the cobra and seperation papers and hand over all your company collateral and are escorted out the building.
You are not given a good reason for the seperation. It feels like your boyfriend or girlfriend just broke up with you. You are blind sided and there is no recourse. You may have come out of unemployment to take this job and have nullified your benefits. You may have run out of benefits. Employers are suave nowadays and are making former employees fight for benefits. They can make up a seperation reason which forfiets you from getting benefits like: voluntary resignation, insubbordination, willful misconduct as well as a list of other excuses they can write so you will have to go through a hearing to fight your case to collect benefits.
This is all legal and employers are taking advantage of good, bright, talented job seekers for thier own whim. Not to mention the mental anguish and depression one goes through when you lose a job without good reason. You become jaded. You are skeptical now to other new jobs. You put up an imaginary invisible protective wall around you which creates a barrier to others hurting you again. With this wall though, people have a hard time figuring us out. We appear one dimensional and that could hinder a new job and the security we look for.
In this job market employers treat job seekers like shoes. If they don't like the shoes anymore or they don't match their outfit, they get rid of them and get another pair. If they get tired of them they get a new pair. They want the best employees to come through the door and cut out their hearts and souls and hand it over to your boss. The mantra you are asked to recite daily is "Company first". Why should you give all of you when they can and will take any opportunity to chew you up and spit you out at any given moment? How do you know if you are a keeper?
Abuse of power is what this job market has to offer. Employers have the upper hand and they are taking advantage of job seekers. We need to have guarantees. The 90 day probationary period needs to get thrown out. Instead replace with 12 month period allowing both the employee and the employer to get into the groove of the new position. More rights for employees needs to be established. We need the labor board to meet employee rights and have stiff fines for employers who take advantage of all employees.
