Cal-Organic Farms Organic Iceberg Lettuce Review

Ice-Cold Iceberg Lettuce Can Be Such a Treat Sometimes, Eh!

T. H. Pankey
When I'm looking for organic iceberg lettuce, more often than not I'm disappointed by the quality of organic iceberg lettuce I see, and so usually pass on it. And this is wherever I shop: Wegmans, Whole Foods, or ShopRite. Then again, my local ShopRite doesn't have any organic produce-though it has lots of organic products on the shelves. A real shame because there's nothing like crunching into an ice-cold iceberg lettuce and tomato salad, sometimes. However, the other day I was pleasantly surprised to see a head of organic iceberg lettuce from Cal-Organic Farms for which I could certainly see myself peeling off a couple of dollars.

From the looks of it in its place in the produce section, it was going to be a nice head of lettuce: and, it was! Crisp, crunchy, clean, large, loose-but not too loose, no brown spots or no spots where it was beginning to go bad somewhere on it, and any other adjective you can think to describe a head of iceberg lettuce would apply here.

Of course, as someone very much into the organic ideal, I did think twice about buying a head of lettuce shipped all the way across the country from California to New York/New Jersey. But not for long, since I'd been craving a nice iceberg and tomato salad for months, and now I was seeing my opportunity. It's not that it was the best head of iceberg lettuce I'd ever seen by far. Still, I thought just what I've already previously stated, "it's few and far between a good head of Icebeg lettuce shows up, certainly slim pickins' when it comes to a good head of iceberg lettuce, so I better grab it!" I'm glad I did. Just like I perceived when I was sizing up the head of lettuce, was what it was once I broke it open.

Before I get into a few of the particulars about the company, here's two little tips about iceberg lettuce:

1) When first getting into a head of iceberg lettuce, rather than using a knife to cut into it, take the head of lettuce in your hand so that where it was cut from the root is facing out, or on the other side of your palm. In other words, grab the head of organic iceberg lettuce on the other side of where it was cut from the root. Now, find a place where you can smack it hard enough so as to shake loose the stem from the rest of the head of lettuce. Unless it's a real loose head of iceberg lettuce, it's not going to just come loose from the rest of the head. However, once you smack the head on something, hitting it with a downward motion as flat as you can, say, on a countertop of large cutting board, the entire head of lettuce is going to loosen up, so that you're able to just pull the remains of the stem( the hard part that's too hard to eat) right out from the rest of the head of lettuce. Ok, that was a mouthful-pun intended.

2) This second tip goes back to the first tip: don't use a knife to cut iceberg lettuce. The sharp cuts cause the lettuce to brown quicker than if you pull the lettuce apart by hand.

Cal-Organic Farms Organic Iceberg Lettuce is categorized as U.S. #1 lettuce, and pleasantly surprising is grown, packed, and distributed all by Cal-Organic Farms. Cal-Organic Farms is a division of Grimmway Enterprises, Inc., out of the wonderful area of Bakersfield, CA. The operation is certified organic by California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF).
