If you've been eating at Calpurnia, the Italian eatery that's down Court Street, the verdict is in on their recent health inspection: They're slipping a little, but it's still a fairly sanitary place from which to eat.

Their recent inspection turned up their highest to date violations score: 14. That's up from five points and two points on their last two inspections, going back to early 2009.

The NYC Department of Health Inspectors found two "critical" violations:

1. "Raw, cooked or prepared food is adulterated, contaminated, cross-contaminated, or not discarded in accordance with HACCP plan.
2. Food contact surface not properly washed, rinsed and sanitized after each use and following any activity when contamination may have occurred."

I'm not too concerned about the cleanliness and how Calpurnia operates. I'd still eat there despite what turned up in this last inspection. What about you?

If we only knew what the health department doesn't catch at other restaurants. This one is probably no different. It's hard to know exactly what they did wrong by the health department violations description. In the first instance it could have something to do with the disposal method of whatever was found. I don't know what to say about the second. It doesn't sound horrible though. I'd probably still eat there if it was in my area and I liked it.
