Solomons, MD 20688
United States of America
From the outside, Calvert Marine Museum doesn't look like much, the most you'd expect is a half hour to an hour's amusement; but don't let the building's exterior fool you, once inside, this little museum will really entertain you. But just before you do step inside; be sure to take in the Drum Point Lighthouse off in the distance (a historic site of its own and also part of Calvert Marine Museum) and the Marie Theresa boat exhibit. I'll come back to Drum Point Lighthouse in a bit because that is a site that deserves its own attention.
Museum Exhibits
Fish
Once inside Calvert Marine Museum you'll have the chance to browse the museum's two fish exhibits; the small one featuring horseshoe crabs and baby stingrays, and the larger exhibit featuring flounder, seahorses, puffer fish, and more.
Boats
Boats are obviously a major part of the museum's exhibits. In the many available displays, you'll learn about different types of boats, how boats were used differently back when Calvert County was primarily a fishing port, the influence of Water men on the local area, and more.
Fossils/Geology
The fossil and geological display is probably the one that most visitors travel to see, probably largely due to the exhibit's emphasis on Calvert County's abundance of shark's teeth. The Calvert Cliffs area is famous for its beach of shark's teeth where tourists can be found daily combing the waters for these relics.
Otters
As you finish up inside and make your way out toward Drum Point Lighthouse, don't miss the Otter display. I think I spent a good 15 to 20 minutes just watching those fascinating little guys swim back and forth and play to the visitors. Quite social creatures they are.
Drum Point Lighthouse
The lighthouse is open at certain times, so if this is one of the attractions you really want to see, just check ahead to be sure it will be open on the day you plan to visit Calvert Marine Museum. Several stories in height, this historic lighthouse gives visitors an intimate view into a time long past, with a fully displayed bedroom, kitchen, and more. And don't miss the view of all the boats in the marina below from the very top of Drum Point Lighthouse.
Attractions Nearby
Flag Pond
A great mix of hiking trails, swamp, and beach area for swimming, fishing, and shark tooth hunting.
The Historic Oyster Museum
Admittedly I don't know much about this museum, but I saw a sign for it on the way into the Calvert Marine Museum parking lot and it sounded quite interesting. I can't help but be intrigued by a museum based entirely around oysters!
The next time you take a trip, consider going to Calvert County to check out the Calvert Marine Museum, and maybe a couple of the nearby local attractions while you're at it.
