Calvin Klein Billboard Ad Features a Foursome, Too Sexy for NY?

My Opinions on the Calvin Klein Billboard and Why it Crosses into Porn

Linda StCyr
Calvin Klein has put up a billboard advertisement on the corner of Houston Street and Layfayette Street (SoHo Area) and people are in an uproar. Some have found the advertisement for jeans amusing while others, the majority, find it distasteful and are calling for the immediate removal of the ad. So what is so shocking about the Calvin Klein billboard?

Sex! Sex! Sex! Yes, I said it three times but I probably should have said it four since the Calvin Klein billboard actually depicts a foursome or the beginnings of one. The ad features three studly male bodies each wearing a pair of Calvin Klein Jeans with their chests left bare. One is sitting on a couch, another lying on the couch with his head in the lap of the male sitting and the other male is on the floor playfully grasping at the buttons of his Calvin Klein Jeans.

That is not what makes the Calvin Klein Jean ad provocative though. The woman who is lying atop the male who is lying on the couch while French Kissing the man sitting on the couch with each male model looking misty eyed and flushed is what makes the ad provocative and borderline porn.

The woman model looks very young almost like a teenager. Since this is common in the modeling world I will give credit to Calvin Klein that they may not have used an underage model for this ad because they can get themselves into big trouble if it is so. Anyway, the young looking female model who is passionately engaged is sexual play with these boys is wearing a pair of cut off Calvin Klein Jeans turned into shorts. The shorts are so short that I believe even Daisy Duke would have blushed.

Now, I am not a prude by any stretch of the imagination and I am very much against censorship but this ad which is displayed for all of New York to see is blatantly sexual and I would cover my kid's eyes if we were walking past it. It is way too sexy to be shown to the public the way it has been presented. If this was in a photography book or on television I could choose whether my children were able to see it. Calvin Klein has taken my parental right and responsibility upon themselves by featuring this ad in a public platform where I cannot remove it from the view of my children. To me that is irresponsible on the part of Calvin Klein. Calvin Klein could have found a much better way to advertise their jeans without going to the pornography shown in this Calvin Klein Billboard.

I don't care that they did this ad but public display was not the right venue. It isn't the first time he has pushed the envelope and it got him the publicity he wanted. He knew exactly what he was doing.

*I must add, I DO disagree on one point, because it isn't opinion but fact-based....porn is described as sexual activity portrayed between nude people. Here, though you may find the picture too sensual or lusty for public display, kissing doesn't really qualify as 'sexual'. Though it is intimate, it has nothing to do with sexual organs. Two, everyone is dressed, whether we approve of the manner/style/amount of clothing. Those two facts determine, outside of any opinion, that this picture is in no way pornography...

This is an interesting subject. May I ask, if it were one man and one woman in a passionate embrace and looking flushed on a couch, would u also be offended? No one is naked in this pic, though yes, skimpy attire is worn by the female model and there are bare chests. But do you get to 'choose' to see people in that and even less at the pool, the beach, etc? I am just curious at what point you draw the line, since technically, it's just two clothed people kissing, something many people do in public every day, whether we would like to see it or not. I'm in no way even really disagreeing with you, I'm just very curious on what makes it 'wrong' to you...I am neither offended by it nor am I 'all for it'...I'm unaffected I suppose. curious though! :)

Hey, Linda - doing some catching up here - you are right. Places that have such clear access to young eyes should be more restrictive. You should see the Abercrombie and Fithc posters that are up in our mall, with nude-chested guys' pants open down to their hairlines just above...and kids walk in there all the time.

Since the publicity hound businesses like CK tend to regard all publicity (for or against) as good publicity, perhaps the good way to get them to take down an ads like this and refrain from making more like it in the future is to... boycott CK. ;o) If enough people do it, CK'll feel the sting after a while.

I'm not a prude either and although it's rather steamy and suggestive, I wouldn't think much if it were in a men's or women's magazine. On a billboard though? Not appropriate at all.

What a good message for kids. That's awful.

  • Katie Sharp6/16/2009

I imagine the thought was all you need are your CK's... but definitely inappropriate!

Linda, I agree, I looked at the add and I would not feel comfortable with my children looking at this. Although my son, I'm sure would love it, he's 17. lol... Really, I think it is a little steamy for public viewing! thanks... :-)
