Celebrity Babies and Why We Love Them

Camila Alves, Matthew McConaughey latest celebrity pregnancy: Is it just me or is there something wrong with the all the media hype when it comes to celebrity pregnancies? Are press releases really necessary when a public figure discovers a bun in the oven? Why do we care if Matthew McConaughey knocked up his model girlfriend Camila Alves? Granted, he's hot and talented and the couple will probably make gorgeous babies. But seriously, is the media frenzy really necessary for what is basically a biological process?

Don't get me wrong. I love babies. When a friend or relative tells me she's pregnant, not only am I thrilled for her and excited about the baby, I am also vaguely jealous. My children are pre-teens and teenagers now and my baby raising days are over. But the powdery, warm, milky smell of new baby skin is enough to make me wonder if it would really be all that bad to start all over at thirty-six and raise another child. Holding a newborn sends longing pouring through my body. When I see pregnant women in town, with the slightly tilted waddle and protective hand resting on the belly, I am envious and nostalgic over my own pregnancies.

But that's a friend...a relative....a neighbor. Someone I know and love or readily recognize and speak to on a fairly regular basis. Not an actor I watch in movies or on TV, not a musician whose music I may not even like. So why do we clamor over information about our favorite actress' little bulge? Is it because we believe these babies will be blessed with an idyllic life we dream of for our own children? It is because we long for the romance and beauty and endless love the actors portray on the big screen or bring into our living rooms?

Maybe not. While some of the 2008 babies to be are blessed with ecstatic and stable prospective parents, like Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves, Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban, and J-Lo and Marc Antony, that's not true for all the little ones. Jillian Grace, Playboy Playmate, says she is going to have a child by David Spade, who responded with the less than romantic, although commendable, "If it is true that I am the father of her child, then I will accept responsibility." Olympic figure skater Nancy Kerrigan, plagued by numerous miscarriages, held off announcing her pregnancy until very recently. And of course, the rumors are true, sixteen year old Jamie Lynn Spears is also pregnant by her "longtime" boyfriend.

Maybe we follow these pregnancies for the romance and the idea of a fantasy childhood. Or maybe we follow them because it brings icons and larger than life celebrities down to a more human level than we normally think of them. Pregnancy and giving birth lets us relate their lives to ours in a very basic and special part of life.
