It seems that the one thing that revitalizes employees and brings people closer together is a retreat. However, the retreat location must be conducive to providing a relaxing atmosphere. If you work in any metropolitan city such as Honolulu, the hustle, bustle and craziness pretty much wears on you. Sitting in traffic for hours at a time also reminds me of how much I hate having to work in such a busy town.

I recently attended a retreat and came out of it feeling refreshed, re-energized and ready to go. Where was this retreat? It was at Camp Erdman in Mokuleia on the North Shore of Oahu.

If you drive towards Kaena point on the island of Oahu, you become keenly aware of the natural surroundings, as the number of houses becomes minimal and then non-existent. The closer you get to the point, the more you see of the mountains, the beach, the birds and nature. You are instantly reminded of what it was like for the ancient Hawaiians. No stores, no buildings, no commercialization whatsoever. This is what makes Camp Erdman the perfect place to get back to basics and an ideal location for a retreat.

On one side of the road are the cabins. The backdrop is the Kaala Mountain Range. The cabins have been renovated and each cabin sleeps a maximum of 16 people with 2 rather large bathrooms and showers. In the morning you can sit on one of the benches outside and will realize that the only thing you can hear are the birds chirping and the smell of the ocean. It is very relaxing and almost tranquilizing.

Across the street is the cafeteria and different areas for activities. You can play basketball on the court, shoot arrows with your bow at the targets, play football in the field, jump in the pool, try the ropes course or go for a dip in the ocean. There are many open and enclosed meeting areas and also a large area for bonfires or a barbecue.

The last time I was there, there were almost 100 other people with me and my cabin was barely half full. In fact I think there were only 7 people in my cabin, which will tell you right away how many people they can accommodate.

It is a great place to host a company retreat or company gathering. It is also a great place to go camping with your family or to just get away from everything and get in touch with nature. Regardless of the reason to visit Camp Erdman, I think you will most definitely enjoy your stay as much as I did.
