Camp Unleashed at Camp Becket...A Way to Spend Time with Your Dog

Deborah Anderson
Camp Unleashed, at Camp Becket of the Chimney corners YMCA, located at 748 Hamilton Road in Becket, Ma. offers a four day weekend of bonding and education for dogs and their owners or handlers. According to Camp Unleashed, "All of Camp Unleashed activities are intended to optimize your dog's world and build the dog-human relationship."

Activities

Activities that campers will have the opportunity to participate in include hiking, agility, Frisbee, flyball, canoeing, canine good citizen and clicker training. There is also dock diving, canine massage, pet therapy, yoga, campfire activities and crafts. The activities offered at this camp are designed for both the dog and their owner so that the two of them can enjoy a fun-filled experience that is also educational, relaxing and satisfying. The dogs that are welcome here do not have to be in tip-top shape or young. All dogs are welcome even seniors and those that are definitely non-athletic.

Accommodations

At the Camp Unleashed Camp Becket location, campers and their dogs can choose from three types of accommodations. They can choose to stay in a rustic cabin, a private room or they can pitch a tent. The rustic cabin is just as it sounds, basically "roughing it". It is a cabin that has no electricity or indoor plumbing. Tent camping is "roughing it" as well, with no modern conveniences such as electricity. If the camper is not the "roughing it" type then they may choose to stay in a private room at Gibson Hall that does have electricity and indoor plumbing.

What to Bring

Bringing the necessary items to camp is always important. No one wants to get where they are going only to discover that the do not have everything they need for their fun-filled weekend. Campers at Camp Unleashed will need to bring items for themselves as well as their dogs. For the dogs, bring their dog food, their bedding and a crate or x-pen if you think it will make their stay more enjoyable. The owner or handler of the dog will need to bring a flashlight, towels, linens, bedding and pillows. They should also bring any toiletries they may need.
