If a family member is confined to a wheelchair then the entering and exiting of the camper can be a real problem. This problem can be helped by checking around and finding a set of ramps that will allow someone to slowly roll the family member slowly up and down the ramps. Once out of the camper try to pick the best and smoothest path to the showers and bathrooms. Most campgrounds are handicapped friendly but not all, so it is best to check ahead of time and plan your stops. It is a beautiful world out there to see, even for a severely handicapped person.
Now let's look at those that have the ability to drive and setup the camper. Even if restricted to a wheelchair a motor home can be driven and setup with planning and thought before even buying the motor home. First find the coach that you want, making sure that there is plenty of room on the inside for you to get around in. I would suggest getting a coach that has slid outs which will almost double the room inside. After choosing a couch then talk to the dealer about installing an electric lift. Most dealers know a company that can do the work. If you are restricted to a wheelchair then also ask about a system that allows you to lock your chair into position behind the steering wheel. These modifications are made all the time.
Remember you aren't the only person in a wheelchair that wants to travel. Make sure that all leveling, slide out and awning controls are placed where they are convenient for you. Now for the outside hookups. The water, electric and sewer will have to be hooked up. Some RV campgrounds are more than happy to help anyone with these hookups. If you have to do these hookup then a little planning can make it a lot easier for you. You can have the hookup points modified to hookup without having to open storage doors which makes it easier to access hoses and electric cable. Remember this is your RV make it easy for you to work with.
There is a big beautiful world to see out there and it is meant to be seen by the handicapped as well as everyone else. God made this world for everyone. Enjoy, have fun and live everyday to the fullest. Happy RVing.
