Camping is a wonderful way to get out and enjoy the great outdoors. An essential part of ensuring you have an enjoyable camping trip is the gear you bring along. A sleeping bag and pad are no substitute for your comfortable bed at home, but having the right gear can help ensure you get a good night's sleep and ready to hit the outdoors again.

Finding the Right Sleeping Bag for Camping

Unfortunately, there's no thermostat in your tent to turn up on those cold evenings, so be sure to get yourself a sleeping bag that can handle the elements. Most sleeping bags provide a temperature rating that you can use as a guide. Sleeping bags appropriately rated for summer camping are those rated between 20 degrees Fahrenheit and 40 degrees Fahrenheit. If you camp primarily in fall or spring, look for a sleeping bag rated between 10 degrees Fahrenheit and 0 degrees Fahrenheit. And for winter campers, to help stay warm on those brisk winter nights, look for bags rated up to -50 degrees Fahrenheit.

When searching for a sleeping bag suitable for camping, also consider the shape of the bag. A mummy styled sleeping bag will be warmer than one that is a standard rectangle in shape. However, rectangular bags do provide more foot room and often can often be combined with another rectangular bag to make a larger sleeping bag to accommodate two adults or several children.

To add to your comfort, look for a sleeping bag that can unzip at the top of the sleeping bag and also at the bottom. This will allow you to unzip the bottom on warmer evenings to keep you cool. Fluffing your sleeping back by shaking out before sleeping can also add to your comfort.

When storing your sleeping bag, hang in a closet or other well ventilated area. It is not recommended to keep bags rolled up tightly as this can prevent the sleeping bag from airing out properly.

Features to Look For in a Sleeping Pad

A sleeping pad not only adds to your comfort when camping in the great outdoors, it also serves as barrier between your sleeping bag and the ground to keep you warm and dry. Without a sleeping pad, your sleeping bag will not be enough to keep warm and dry.

When looking for a sleeping pad look for a waterproof design such as those found in closed-cell foam pads. Closed-cell foam pads are great insulators and will stay dry. Also consider a full-sized 72" sleeping pad to for added comfort and protection.

Where to Find Sleeping Bags and Pads

There are numerous sites available online to purchase sleeping bags and sleeping pads for your next camping trip. Sites such as REI, Cabelas, and Sierra Trading Post offer a full selection of sleeping bags and sleeping pads. Or if you prefer to make your purchase at the store, many camping stores, sporting goods and discount retailers offer a wide selection for you to choose from.

Don't let sleepless nights ruin your camping trip, take the time to find the right sleeping bag and sleeping pad to ensure you enjoy a night of restful sleep on your next camping trip.
