After you have invested money into camping gear it only makes sense that you would want to preserve it so that it can last. This is why you want to make sure that your camping gear is stored away properly. As a person who loves to camp I have found a few ways to store our equipment so that it will last longer. Of course when it comes to storage you don't need a garage, or expensive shelves. If you live in a small space there are plenty of ways to store your items in a neat and organized way. Below are several tips on how you can properly store your camping gear, so that your equipment will last longer.
Plastic bins work wonders
Plastic storage bins are very affordable, and you can find them in a variety of sizes. When it comes to storing your tent, and other camping gear, bins come in handy. It makes sense to put your tents and the gear into one bin and label it. For the other items like camping chairs, and your utensils, or lights, another bin would be a great idea. You can tape index cards to the top of the bins with a description of what's inside.
Check for damaged items
Prior to packing up your camping gear, you will want to check and see if there are any rips or tears in your tent. You will also want to check for damaged items like lights, and even your camping chairs. Examining each of the seams on your tent, and also check the floor to see if there are any rips, or tears. In order to properly inspect your gear you will need to lay it out, and look on both sides.
Clean and dry it
Prior to storing your gear you will want to make sure that you give it a good cleaning, and then dry it all off completely before rolling it up and storing it. You can lay your tent out in the yard, and hose down the tent and the tarps. Allow them to dry in the sun, completely by hanging it up on a clothesline. After everything has dried fold the items up, and pack them away.
Don't pack the sleeping bags with the tents
One thing that many tend to do is pack away sleeping bags along with the tent. I have found that it is a much better idea, to pack the sleeping bags in a linen closet or in an under bed storage container. This will keep the sleeping bags in good shape, and avoid getting any mold and mildew in it.
