Camping in Hocking Hills State Park

The Hocking Hills area of Ohio, just east of Columbus, offers gorgeous scenery, matchless hiking opportunities, and plentiful camping options. Hocking Hills State Park offers one of the largest campgrounds in the area. Sometimes state parks can be great for camping, while other state parks leave something to be desired. The Hocking Hills State Park campground offers 156 electric sites and 13 non-electric sites. Each camping site at Hocking Hills State Park has a paved pad as well as a grassy area with a fire pit and picnic table. Tents, campers of all types, and RVs up to 50' are all welcome on all Hocking Hills State Park campground sites. Also available on site are 40 cottages and three camper cabins, if you aren't the type to "rough it."

The Hocking Hills State Park campground has flush toilets and heated showers. While the bathhouses were not the greatest, they were certainly adequate. Each offered three showers which did have plenty of hot water, three sinks, and five flush toilets. Other latrine facilities are located closer to some campsites, but these facilities do not have flush toilets.

The campsites at Hocking Hills State Park campground are spacious and wooded. You won't feel too cramped next to the campers on either side, which is a great amenity. If you are a tent camper, be forewarned that there are few flat campsites at the campground. The Hocking Hills is, after all, a hilly area, and the state park campground is situated among the hills. There are a few flat campsites, however, that will accommodate tent campers just fine.

At the entrance to the Hocking Hills State Park campground there is a small camp store. The store offers Hocking Hills State Park maps and souvenirs including t-shirts, firewood, ice, and some other camping supplies such as marshmallow roasters, some food, sunscreen, and bug repellent. The prices in the store are not astronomical which seems to be the case with so many camp stores.

Compared to other campgrounds in the area, Hocking Hills State Park offered very affordable nightly rates. The rates can always be found on their website through the Ohio State Parks Department.

There is a swimming pool that is accessible to Hocking Hills State Park campers, but expect to have to drive to it. There are also small playgrounds located throughout the campground, but they are pretty shabby, so bring the kids' bikes and games to keep them occupied.

Overall Hocking Hills State Park offers wonderful camping in this lovely area of Ohio. The campsites are spacious and wooded, the bathhouses are adequate, and the camp store is well stocked with affordable supplies.
