Quick and Easy Camping Recipe for Delicious Pizza

It is sometimes hard to get a piping hot pizza delivered to a remote area when you're on a hiking or canoe camping trip, but sometimes you just get the overwhelming urge for the crispy crust, melted cheese and tangy sauce of a fresh made pizza. What do you do? It's easy, you just dig around in your backpack and pull out all of the ingredients that you need for a camping pizza and within about 15 minutes, you can be the envy of your fellow camping companions as you devour your delectable pizza - just be sure to bring enough ingredients to make a few extras! These pizzas can also be made on the grill and make a unique and entertaining theme for a get together.

INGREDIENTS

Pita bread (1 - 2 per person)

Mozzarella cheese (grated1/8 cup per pizza)

Pizza Sauce (1/8 cup per pizza)

Butter or olive oil

OPTIONAL

Mushrooms (1/8 cup per pizza)

Green/Red Peppers (1/8 cup per pizza)

Olives (1 - 2 tbs per pizza)

Pepperoni (8 - 10 per pizza)

Sun Dried Tomatoes (2 - 3 per pizza)

OTHER

Camp fire and grate

Gas or charcoal grill

Metal Spatula

Tin foil

  1. Brush one side of the pita bread with butter or olive oil.
  2. Place buttered/oiled side down on a hot grill or cooking crate
  3. Cook for approximately 5 minutes or until toasted and crispy.
  4. Remove pita from grill or grate with metal spatula.
  5. Brush uncooked side with butter or olive oil.
  6. Place buttered side down on a plate.
  7. Add pizza sauce, cheese and toppings of your choice.
  8. Place buttered side down back onto grill or cooking crate
  9. Lightly cover with tin foil to melt cheese while toasting bottom side of the pita.
  10. Cook for approximately 5 minutes or until toasted and crispy.
  11. Remove from grill or cooking grate with metal spatula, allow to cool for 2 - 3 minutes, slice, and enjoy.

The ingredients listed above are only a scratch on the surface of the number of combinations that you can put together. The ingredients you choose are only limited to your imagination and the space in your backpack. Be mindful of foods that require refrigeration (cheese) or foods that are fragile (tomatoes). This recipe works great for kids as well because they will enjoy the chance to be involved in the creation and cooking process of their personalized pizza.
