Can an Artist Believe?

Should an Artist Believe?

Jacob Malewitz
Faith comes when you see something big happen. Perhaps you survive a major illness, or just survive losing a job ... maybe just get through the one day you didn't want to go to work. When an artist believes, faith is different entirely. For an artist to survive pain, faith is needed. Or is it? This article explores whether or not an artist can/should believe in God. God is a big word-the biggest this article offers.

Is Faith the Answer?

Faith isn't always the answer. Many famed artists have created masterpieces, with no help, so they say, from God. Again, God is a big word. Some think giving credit to God shows nothing for the talent of an artist. Yet some of the best artists of all time believed. For example, William Blake, a renowned English artist, had no problem offering God credit.

Faith can be the answer. Sometimes, with it you can find the artist within.

Finding the Artist:

Some of us are absent of faith, but full of creativity. Some create as an act of hope towards God. This higher force is channel which can engage our imaginations. Some of the best stories ever are religious stories, no matter your faith. The artist within can be found without God, sure, but sometimes you will find God along the way.

Looking to the Sky:

The sky is heaven ... right? God is essentially a channel to you as an artist. So must an artist look toward the sky so much? You don't have to believe. Sometimes it's easier to have no faith, to not care what happens if you fail. However, faith can bring you out of the darkest points, showing you a light beyond. You can look to the sky for heaven, or maybe you can look within yourself. Sometimes you will see both heaven and hell.

If there is a Hell ...

There is evil in the world. Again, there are many artists who don't believe in heaven or hell. Yet, there is often hellish things happening here, in the past, present, and future. An artist believing can see himself out of it. Maybe hell isn't as pictured in the Bible or as pictured by priests and pastors. Yet there have been those who made hell on earth. It happened during the times of Hitler and Stalin.

Heaven is a Beginning:

Heaven is the beginning and ending to all this, a point of light and criticism. If you ever decide to be an artist, having a grasp of heaven and hell can help. Does an artist have to believe? Can he live a full life without God? That isn't the question; the question asks whether you can. You can, in many places, believe in whatever you want. Maybe believing will make you stronger, as it has done for many. An artist can believe in God.
