Before you head out to the dealership to purchase your first car, or before you decide to buy a new vehicle you need to find out a few things about car insurance. Believe it or not, everybody is not eligible for car insurance, yet every state requires that a vehicle is insured if driven on public roadways. So to keep yourself from becoming stuck with a vehicle that you cannot insure and thus cannot drive, find out if your are eligible for car insurance.

Guidelines for receiving insurance varies from state to state, but basic requirements are similar. There are many methods to use to find out if you are eligible for car insurance. For example you can contact your local Secretary of State branch to help determine your eligibility. You could contact any major automotive insurance company and ask question pertaining to insurance, and you can even ask friends and family about the topic.

Luckily, much of the work of contacting your local Secretary of State branch or an auto insurer is typically not needed. In general, anyone of legal age to drive a vehicle can purchase auto insurance. There are a few exceptions to this rule which will be discussed. But the general guidelines suggest that anyone legally able to drive is also allowed to purchase automotive insurance.

For example, if you have a learner's permit or a restricted license received once you have completed the driver's certification process, then you are eligible for automotive insurance. If you are a fully licensed driver, you are eligible for automotive insurance. If you have several tickets or points on your record, you are also likely to be eligible for automotive insurance.

Now for the exceptions to the above rule.. Certain medical conditions will make you exempt from receiving a driver's license. Without a driver's license, you are not eligible to purchase automotive insurance. If you have several serious driving offenses such as DUI, reckless driving, or other infractions your license may be revoked which would prevent you from purchasing automotive insurance.

An additional exemption from the rule would apply to certain people with a felony on their criminal record or previous criminal activities that deem them unacceptable for a driver's license. Without a driver's license, you cannot purchase car insurance.

Automotive insurance is available to the majority of individuals who can bot afford to purchase it and who can present a valid driver's license for the state they currently reside in.
