Can Your Diet Help You Sleep Better?

Jody Morse
Many of us have problems sleeping eight hours a night, let alone sticking to a regular sleeping routine. Although you may not even realize it, certain things that you could be eating - or not eating - may be having an affect on your sleeping patterns. Here, we will take a much closer look at some of the different things that you should be sure to take into consideration if you want to sleep better at night.

What Types of Foods Should You Eat at Dinner?

Health carbohydrates, such as fruits, vegetables, and whole wheat breads and pastas are all great choices. The main reason that you should eat these foods at dinner are because they will help satisfy your hunger, as they are known to make the body feel the fullest. While you may not even realize it, one of the main reasons that you could be waking up in the middle of the night could be because you are hungry. Another one of the reasons that you are recommended to eat carbohydrates during dinner time is because they are known to produce serotonin, which is known to help the body fall asleep quicker. Many people recommend you to eat your larger meals during breakfast/lunch and your smaller meal at dinner because it helps with digestion (which may ultimately affect sleep), but you should do whatever seems to help you sleep the best. Since everyone's body is different, what may work for someone else may not work too well for you.

Should You Drink Anything After Dinner?

This is another thing that mainly depends on you and your body. Most people find it the most effective to stop drinking anything around six o'clock - especially anything that is high in caffeine such as soda or coffee. Alcohol is also a no-no if you want to sleep regularly, even though a common misconception is that it can help you fall asleep quicker. Water is something that you will probably want to avoid drinking after 6 o'clock, mainly because it can cause you to have to get up in the middle of the night to urinate. Teas, such as chamomile tea or green tea, may be acceptable to drink, especially since they are known to work as appetite suppressants. Warm milk has always been credited for helping people fall asleep quicker due to the tryptophan that it contains, which is known to promote sleep. You may want to drink a glass of reduced fat or skin milk with your meal or as a snack before bedtime to help you sleep better. Low fat cheese is known to work much the same way.

These are just some of the many things that you may want to take into consideration if you are interested in a diet that will help you sleep better at night. The most important thing is learning what helps you sleep the best at night. One of the best ways to learn what you may or may not want to eat before bedtime in order to sleep the best is a food diary. Record what you have eaten and how your slept at night, in order to keep track of what is going on with your body.
